Island Hopping in Exuma: A Day with Iguanas, Sharks, and Pigs
When the call of the ocean beckoned, I couldn’t resist the allure of the Exuma Private Island adventure. With promises of iguanas, sharks, and pigs, this trip was a must for any island enthusiast. Join me as I recount a day filled with sun, sea, and unforgettable encounters.
Setting Sail to Paradise
The day began with a gentle breeze and the promise of adventure. My partner and I were picked up from our cozy Caribbean hideaway and whisked away to the dock, where a sleek powerboat awaited. The anticipation was palpable as we boarded, eager to leave the hustle and bustle behind and embrace the serenity of the Exuma chain. The engines roared to life, and we were off, skimming across the azure waters with the wind in our hair.
As a former professional surfer, I’ve always had a deep connection with the ocean, and this journey was no exception. The view from the rear seat was breathtaking, though the engines’ hum was a bit of a symphony in itself. On the return trip, we found a quieter spot two rows forward, allowing us to soak in the scenery without the soundtrack of horsepower.
Our first stop was Allens Cay, where we were greeted by a lively crowd of iguanas. Armed with grapes, we fed these eager creatures, their vibrant scales glistening in the sun. It was a quick stop, but the memory of those curious eyes stayed with me as we continued our journey.
Island Bliss at Ship Channel Cay
Arriving at Ship Channel Cay felt like stepping into a postcard. The island was a paradise of white sands and crystal-clear waters, and the open bar was a welcome sight. With a beach chair claimed and a drink in hand, we were ready to embrace the day’s adventures.
Feeding the pigs was a highlight, especially the adorable piglets. Their playful antics brought smiles all around, and the adults were just as charming. Next, we turned our attention to the rays gliding gracefully just off the beach. Feeding these gentle creatures was a serene experience, a reminder of the ocean’s wonders.
The excitement peaked as we watched the crew handle nurse, reef, and lemon sharks by the docks. These powerful fish commanded respect, their presence a thrilling reminder of the ocean’s untamed beauty. Lunchtime followed, a feast of grilled mahi-mahi, fried fish, and a variety of sides that satisfied our appetites and fueled our spirits for the afternoon.
A Taste of Bahamian Culture
After lunch, we indulged in a bit of downtime, lounging under the sun and letting the island’s tranquility wash over us. The highlight of the afternoon was a demonstration of making Bahamian conch salad. Watching the fresh ingredients come together was a sensory delight, and the taste was nothing short of spectacular.
With about 90 minutes left, we took to the water, swimming and soaking up the sun’s warmth. The ocean felt like a second home, its embrace familiar and comforting. As the day drew to a close, we reluctantly boarded the boat back to Nassau, our hearts full of memories and our spirits rejuvenated.
This adventure was more than just a day trip; it was a celebration of island life, a reminder of the beauty that lies just beyond the horizon. The friendly staff and seamless experience made it all the more special, and as we returned to our AirBnB, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share this slice of paradise with you all. Until the next adventure, keep riding the waves of life!
