Bahir Dar - Begin the day with a flight to Bahirdar. Upon arrival and hotel check-in, enjoy a boat cruise on Lake Tana to explore the ancient 14th-century island monasteries. Lake Tana’s 37 islands are home to 20 monasteries, which are remnants of a historic, contemplative tradition. Due to their seclusion, these monasteries have been used to safeguard treasures and religious relics from across the nation. They are renowned for their Ethiopian religious paintings, illuminated manuscripts, and other ancient church artifacts.
After lunch at the hotel, embark on a 35 km drive to witness the breathtaking Blue Nile Falls. Just 30 km from Lake Tana, the Blue Nile cascades over a 45-meter-high cliff, creating one of Africa’s most stunning waterfalls. The walk to the falls through the scenic river gorge, crossing the ancient 17th-century bridge, and interacting with local villagers along the way, offers a memorable experience.
Bahirdar, Lalibela
Lalibela - Following breakfast, transfer from the hotel to Bahirdar airport for a flight to Lalibela. After checking into the hotel, visit the site of Ethiopia’s renowned rock-hewn churches, often hailed as one of “the living wonders of the world.” These churches have served as an active Christian shrine and the spiritual heart of the country’s religious life for over 800 years. Carved in the 12th century AD by King Lalibela, the monolithic churches are set on a 2,600-square-meter natural rock terrace.
Bete Medhani Alem, the largest monolithic rock-hewn church globally, stands 37.7 ft. tall, spans nearly 2625 square ft., and features walls up to 6 feet thick. Supported by 36 interior pillars and another 36 exterior pillars, Bete Medhani Alem was inspired by the original St. Mary Zion Church built by King Ezana in the 4th century at Axum.
Today’s visit includes Bete Medhani Alem, Bete Mariam, Bete Meskel, Bete Denagil, Bete Golgotha Michael, and Bete Giorgis. After lunch and a rest at the hotel, delve deeper into Ethiopia’s rich history by exploring more of Lalibela’s extraordinary churches. Their architecture and artistry are truly awe-inspiring. Following the visit to the second group of churches, walk through the intricate labyrinth of underground tunnels to the monastery where monks and nuns reside.
This afternoon’s exploration includes Bete Gebriel, Bete Mercorios, Bete Emanuel, Bethlehem, and Bete Aba Libanos.
