Since 1782, the palace has served as the official residence of the Kings of Siam (and later Thailand). The king, his court, and his royal government were based within the palace grounds until 1925. The Grand Palace continues to host official events, with numerous royal ceremonies and state functions taking place within its walls each year. It remains one of Thailand’s most visited tourist attractions.

The Royal Palace is open daily from 08:30 to 15:30.

The Royal Palace complex, established in 1782, includes not only royal and throne halls but also several government offices and the famous Temple of the Emerald Buddha. It spans 218,000 square meters and is enclosed by four walls measuring 1,900 meters in length. Following King Rama I’s ascension to the throne in 1782, the palace was constructed. Before this, the royal palace and administrative center were situated in Thonburi, on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River. Due to various reasons, the new King deemed the former capital unsuitable and chose to establish a new capital on the opposite side of the river.

By his royal decree, a palace was constructed to serve as both his residence and the location for administrative offices. Since then, the royal compound has been known as The Royal Palace. The first two buildings erected within the complex were the Dusit Haha Prasat Throne Hall and the Phra Maha Monthian.
