This market is a treasure trove for anyone interested in the relics of China’s past, offering everything from Cultural Revolution memorabilia to reproductions from the Qing Dynasty.

Walking through the market, I was reminded of the bustling bazaars of Kyoto, where my mother would take me as a child. The air was filled with the scent of incense and the chatter of vendors, each eager to share the stories behind their wares. Our guide, Jerry, was a delightful companion, his humor and knowledge adding depth to the experience. He encouraged us to explore at our own pace, a refreshing approach that allowed us to truly savor the moment.

The Art of Bargaining and Culinary Delights

Our next stop was the Hongqiao Pearl Market, a haven for those seeking a more contemporary shopping experience. Here, the art of bargaining came to life, a skill I had honed during my travels across Asia. Jerry was instrumental in guiding us through the process, ensuring we left with both treasures and tales to tell.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to the Beiping Shengshi Roasted Duck Restaurant. The anticipation of tasting the famed Peking Duck was palpable. This dish, steeped in history and tradition, did not disappoint. The duck was roasted to perfection, its skin crisp and the meat tender. Jerry demonstrated the traditional way to enjoy it, wrapping the succulent slices in pancakes with spring onion and sweet bean sauce. The meal was a symphony of flavors, complemented by dishes like Kong Po Chicken and a unique cauliflower preparation that left a lasting impression.

The evening culminated in a visit to the Red Theatre for an acrobatic show that was nothing short of spectacular.
