Divis - Embark on a personal guided tour of the renowned Belfast murals, painted by former prisoners from both communities. These murals narrate stories of conflict, community struggles, civil rights, unrest, inspiration, prison protests, and more. The guide, with local expertise, will share these stories in an engaging manner, using photographs and videos from the 1970s onward, showcasing the neighborhoods you will explore. Experience the atmosphere as you stand at the very locations where these events occurred over fifty years ago. The first stop is at the Welcome Wall at the beginning of the World Famous Falls Road, the heart of West Belfast, a Republican area. The guide will introduce you to the stunning wall art associated with the 854-year-old Republican struggle for Irish freedom. You will also see the notable Divis Tower, once occupied by the British Army as an observation post and sniper’s nest during the Troubles.
-
International Mural Wall Divis Street - Discover the largest outdoor gallery of politically charged art in Western Europe. Capture stunning photos of Republican wall art, including the ten hunger strikers who sacrificed their lives for their political beliefs in 1981, featuring the revolutionary icon Bobby Sands. The guide will explain the conflict with the “Iron Lady,” former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. You will also see murals related to other global conflicts, including Palestine/Israel. The most recent addition is a mural of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement. Other murals include Nelson Mandela, the South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and political leader who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. This is also where you can capture a photo of the Peace Gates, and your guide will explain their significance.
-
Peace Wall - Capture photos of the peace lines or peace walls, which are a series of separation barriers in Northern Ireland that divide predominantly Republican and nationalist Catholic neighborhoods from predominantly Loyalist and Unionist Protestant neighborhoods. They have been constructed in urban interface areas in Belfast, Derry, Portadown, and elsewhere. The peace lines aim to minimize inter-communal violence between Catholics (mostly nationalists/Republicans who identify as Irish) and Protestants (mostly Unionists/Loyalists who identify as British). The peace lines vary in length from a few hundred yards to over three miles (5 km). They may be made of iron, brick, and/or steel and can reach up to 25 feet (8 meters) high. Some have gates (sometimes staffed by police) that allow passage during daylight but are closed at night. Most peace walls are located in Belfast, but they also exist in Derry, Portadown, and Lurgan.
-
Shankill Road - Learn about King Billy, the bonfires, and the House of Orange. See the murals from the Loyalist Shankill Road, including Stevie “Top Gun,” and observe the flags that adorn the Shankill, considered the heartland of Ulster Loyalism. The guide will explain the role Loyalists played during the Troubles. You will also visit the Bayardo Bar Memorial and see images of the Queen and UVF paramilitaries.
-
Peace Wall Belfast - The next stop is at the largest section of the infamous Peace Wall, where you will see where US President Bill Clinton and the Dalai Lama signed the wall. Here, you can also write your name and leave a message, as well as take photos to share with friends and followers on social media!
