- Devaraja Market - Arriving at Devaraja Market approximately 3.5 hours after departing from Bangalore, visitors find one of South India’s most captivating destinations, especially for Western travelers. This lively and colorful market is a must-see on any Mysore itinerary. Open year-round, the market is organized in a rectangular grid with distinct sections for vegetables, fruits, and flowers. Its photogenic nature often leads tourists to wander freely, losing track of their paths. Street vendors, perfume makers, chai-wallahs, garland makers, color pigment sellers, and bag sellers all compete for attention, eager to showcase their goods. To witness a microcosm of India in action, a visit to this market is essential. Experience it firsthand! From here, the guide will escort you to the Central Bus Stand to catch public transport to Chamundi Hill, a half-hour drive away.
- Chamundi Hills - Chamundi Hills, forming the scenic backdrop of Mysore, are integral to the city’s identity. Atop the hill stands a temple dedicated to Chamundeshwari, who defeated the demon Mahishasura. The name Mysuru is derived from this demon. The temple draws such large crowds that visiting can be challenging. However, nearby lies a serene and ancient Shiva temple. The vibrant atmosphere, bustling bazaar, offerings, priests, flower-sellers, vendors, cows, shopkeepers, photographers, and talisman sellers all vie for space on this lively hilltop. The surroundings of the temple are often more captivating than the temple itself! The bus ride to the hill’s base offers breathtaking panoramic views of Mysore city. Lunch will be served at a local vegetarian restaurant.
- Mysuru Palace - The Mysore Palace is the most opulent and luxurious palace in South India, often referred to as the “Palace of Versailles” of India. Constructed in 1912 in the Indo-Saracenic style, the palace’s chief architect was Henry Irwin, an Englishman. The palace’s splendor includes tiles from England, marble from Italy, chandeliers from Czechoslovakia, cast iron pillars and stained glass from Scotland, teak wood from Burma, and jaguar bronze statues from England. Situated on 45 acres of land, the palace complex also houses numerous temples. It is divided into two sections: one managed by the State Government and the other by the royal Wodeyar family. The Mysore Palace attracts more visitors annually than the Taj Mahal!
- Jaganmohan Palace Art Gallery And Auditorium - Built in 1861, this palace is a significant landmark in Mysore. It currently showcases a remarkable collection of paintings by Raja Ravi Verma, Nikolai Roerich, Haldenkar (including the famous Lady with the Lamp painting), as well as murals and exceptional contemporary works by renowned Indian artists. The Art Gallery also features exhibits of war weapons, classical musical instruments, sculptures, brassware, antique coins, and currencies. A unique artifact on display is a French clock with a mechanism that features a parade of miniature soldiers every hour, with drums marking the seconds and a bugle marking the minute. This treasure trove, representing Indian art and handicrafts, is often overlooked by tourists. After this visit, we proceed to the Mysore Train Station to catch our train to Bangalore. The train journey takes 2.5 hours, and we expect to arrive in Bangalore by 9 pm.
