- The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities - The Egyptian Museum of Antiquities showcases numerous significant artifacts from ancient Egyptian history. It boasts the largest collection of Pharaonic antiquities worldwide. Established by the Egyptian government in 1835 near the Ezbekeyah Garden, the museum was later relocated to the Cairo Citadel. In 1855, the Egyptian government gifted all the artifacts to Archduke Maximilian of Austria, which are now housed in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. A new museum was founded at Boulaq in 1858 in a former warehouse, following the creation of the Antiquities Department led by Auguste Mariette. Situated on the Nile River’s bank, the building suffered extensive damage during a flood in 1878. In 1891, the collections were transferred to a former royal palace in Cairo’s Giza district, remaining there until 1902 when they were moved to the current museum in Tahrir Square.
- Coptic Cairo - Coptic Cairo is a section of Old Cairo that includes the Babylon Fortress, the Coptic Museum, the Hanging Church, the Greek Church of St. George, and numerous other Coptic churches and historical sites. According to Christian tradition, the Holy Family visited this area and stayed at the site of Saints Sergius and Bacchus Church (Abu Serga). Coptic Cairo served as a bastion for Christianity in Egypt until the Islamic era, although most of the existing church buildings in Coptic Cairo were constructed after the Muslim conquest of Egypt in the 7th century.
