Elmina Castle - St. George’s Castle (Elmina Castle), Elmina (1482)
St. George’s Castle, located in Elmina in Ghana’s Central Region, is celebrated as the first significant European structure in tropical Africa. Established by the Portuguese in 1482, the castle’s site was strategically chosen by Portuguese explorers for its prime location at the tip of a narrow promontory, close to both the Atlantic Ocean and the Benya River. The sheltered side of the low headland offered an ideal natural harbor. Known to the Portuguese as ‘Sao Jorge da Mina’ after Portugal’s patron saint, the castle granted them a trade monopoly in the area, providing unparalleled access to the region’s gold. The vast trade volumes led to labor shortages, as navies struggled to transport the large quantities of European goods to all markets. The early 16th century saw the importation of slaves from Benin in exchange for gold and ivory. -
Kakum National Park - The Kakum National Park canopy walk features a series of seven suspension bridges, stretching 330-350 meters and reaching heights of up to 40 meters in Ghana’s Kakum National Park. This walk allows visitors to explore the treetops, offering a unique view of the rainforest, though it may be intimidating for those afraid of heights. Constructed with wire ropes, ladders, and wooden planks, the walk is secured with safety nets.
Length and height: The walkway spans approximately 330-350 meters and can rise up to 40 meters above the forest floor.
Structure: Comprising seven suspension bridges, it is built with wire ropes, aluminum ladders, and wooden planks, and is secured by safety netting.
Experience: Visitors traverse the rainforest canopy, enjoying breathtaking views of the forest that are not visible from the ground. The bridges can be noisy.
Safety: The structure is secured by nets for safety, with regular maintenance including rope replacements.
- Cape Coast Castle - Cape Coast Castle, originally named ‘Cabo Corso’ meaning ‘short cape’, was the name given by the Portuguese to the local settlement where their trade lodge was established in 1555. The name evolved into ‘Cape Coast’, now the recognized name of the capital of Ghana’s Central Region. The Swedes, under Krusenstjerna, initiated the construction of the permanent structure now known as Cape Coast Castle. They built a fort in 1653, naming it Carlousburg after King Charles X of Sweden. Its proximity to St. George’s Castle (Elmina Castle) and its protected beach attracted European nations to Cape Coast. The area’s lucrative trade led to competition for control, with the Swedes struggling to maintain their fort, which was subsequently captured by the Danes and the local chief. The Dutch took over in 1660, and finally, the British fleet, led by Captain Holmes, seized the fort in 1665, upgrading it to a castle by 1700.
