- Paseo Tablado de Piñones - This cultural tour takes visitors to the town of Piñones, where the vibrant culture, music, and art are deeply rooted in the heritage of enslaved African ancestors from centuries ago. The Municipality of Loíza is considered one of the most authentic centers of African culture in the Western world, with ancestry linked to the Yoruba tribe of West Africa. Piñones offers a scenic ocean drive to Loíza, where visitors can enjoy local dining and experience the Puerto Rican tradition of chinchorreo. Delight in sampling delicious finger food specialties (1pp included).
- Loíza - Located on the island of Puerto Rico, the Municipality of Loíza is home to the beautiful and easily accessible Cueva María de la Cruz, not far from the Piñones sector. This cave is significant for its archaeological findings, as it was here that remains of Puerto Rico’s earliest settlers, the Arcaico indigenous people, were discovered during an exploration led by anthropologist Dr. Ricardo Alegría in 1948. The cavern is a limestone treasure, showcasing remarkable cave and limestone formations.
- Monserrate Beach - Ranked among the world’s top 30 beaches, Balneario La Monserrate is situated in the eastern region of Puerto Rico, specifically in the town of Luquillo. The water is warm, calm, and clear, making it ideal for everyone, especially families. The beach is lined with palm and almond trees, and the clean, golden sand stretches for about a mile, backed by a grove of coconut palms. This has earned the locals the nickname “Los come cocos” (the coconut eaters). In the distance, the dramatic peaks of El Yunque rainforest can be seen, often shrouded in purple thunderclouds.
- Playa Luquillo - Known for its seemingly endless row of friquitines, or kiosks, selling delicious local seafood specialties, the Luquillo Kiosks consist of around 60 family-owned stalls offering food, drinks, and souvenirs. This is an ideal stop for fresh oysters and local food staples after a day at the beach on the east coast and a hike in El Yunque.
- El Yunque National Forest - Enjoy an easy, picturesque hike through the El Yunque rainforest to the river bath sacred to the Taino Indians. Visitors can soak in the cool waters of the only tropical rainforest in the USDA National Forest system. El Yunque National Forest boasts great biodiversity with distinct and varied ecological zones within a relatively small area. Hundreds of different animal species inhabit El Yunque, including 26 endemic to the island. Eels, chopa fish, and river shrimp can be seen in the crystal-clear waters.
- Canóvanas - On the return drive to the metropolitan area, visitors can stop at Panadería España or Condado. The journey takes Highway 66 through the municipality of Canóvanas, known as la Cuna de los Indios (“The Indians’ Cradle”) or Pueblo Valeroso (“The Valiant Town”), partly because the local tribe helped defend the Spaniards from the native Taíno uprising in 1511. However, the most relevant name today is la Ciudad de las Carreras (“The Racing Horse Town”), as it is home to the only horse track on the island, and the local culture is closely tied to equestrian sports. This completes the exploration of five municipalities in the Northeast.
