- Rua do Lavradio - The pink and white building before you is the Masonic Palace of Lavradio. It was designated and protected in 1972 by Inepac, the State Institute of Cultural Heritage, due to the historical significance of Freemasonry during Brazil’s imperial era.
- The Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Sebastian - You might not have expected to encounter a pyramid-shaped cathedral in historic Rio. Yet, the Cathedral of San Sebastian is a modern representation reminiscent of pre-Columbian pyramids.
- Royal Portuguese Reading Room - This beautifully carved façade belongs to the Royal Portuguese Reading Cabinet. This library is listed by the State Institute of Cultural Heritage and was named the fourth most beautiful library in the world by Times magazine.
- Confeitaria Colombo - On your right, you see this charming vintage café. This is Confeitaria Colombo, a true Rio institution. It’s reminiscent of Paris during the Belle Époque! This café was established in 1894 by Portuguese immigrants.
- Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil - CCBB Rio de Janeiro - The large building to your left is the Banco do Brasil Cultural Center. As the name suggests, this neoclassical building was originally dedicated to finance!
- Church of Our Lady of the Candelaria - You are facing the stunning baroque Church of Our Lady of Candelaria. Its story begins with a legend. In the 17th century, a ship named Candelaria braved a storm at sea and narrowly avoided shipwreck.
- Avenida Rio Branco - You now proceed along Rio Branco Avenue, known as Avenue de la rivière blanche in French. Formerly Central Avenue, it was the main urban reform led by Mayor Pereira Passos in the early 20th century.
- Sao Bento Monastery - Here is the entrance to the São Bento Monastery, or St. Benedict in French. Feel free to pause the Audio Guide and explore it upstairs.
- Praça Mauá - You arrive at Praça Mauá, completely revamped for the Olympic Games. At the city’s inception, it was called “Largo da prainha,” meaning the patio of the small beach, referencing the beautiful cove below.
- Museu do Amanha - What stands out in this square is the incredible museum by the bay. This is the Museu do Amanhã, the Museum of Tomorrow, the centerpiece of the grand project to revitalize the Porto Maravilha district.
- Rio de Janeiro - Walking away from the museum and admiring it, standing out in white against the turquoise bay waters, highlights the building’s uniqueness.
- Orla Prefeito Luiz Paulo Conde - The entire walk, leading to Place du XV novembre along Guanabara Bay, is part of the transformation of the urban port area.
- Avenida Mercilio Rodrigues - This unusual sculpture, reminiscent of children’s games with windmills, is the Olympic flame of Rio 2016. After the opening ceremony at Maracana Stadium, the flame was brought to the square.
- Travessa do Comercio - This quaint cobblestone street you’re on is called Travessa do Comércio, retaining the charm of colonial Rio with its ancient stone houses and narrow sidewalks.
- R. La Place, 15 - You are in the heart of Rio de Janeiro’s historic district, in the square of November 15. November 15 is significant in Brazil as it marks the proclamation of the Republic.
- Paço Imperial - The large white building occupying the square’s side, simple yet elegant, was the residence of Emperors Dom Pedro I and II. Built in the 18th century, it was initially intended for the governors of the captaincy of Rio de Janeiro.
- Tiradentes Palace - Adjacent to the Imperial Palace is the Tiradentes Palace, the seat of the Legislative Assembly. Brazil is a federal country, similar to the United States, Australia, Germany, Switzerland, or India.
- Brazil place - You arrive at Carioca Square, a popular spot due to its major metro station serving multiple lines. Despite its modernity and bustling executives, employees, and street vendors, it also features elements from the colonial Brazilian era.
- Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro - You stand before the beautiful Municipal Theatre of Rio. If it seems familiar, it’s because it was modeled after the Opéra Garnier in Paris.
- Fundação Biblioteca Nacional - On your left is the Rio National Library. Its eclectic architecture, blending neoclassical and art nouveau styles, is intentionally impressive.
- Cinelandia - This entire area is now known as Cinelandia. Locals will refer to it as Cinelândia Square, though its official name is Floriano Peixoto Square, honoring Brazil’s second President, whose statue stands in front of the library.
- Teatro Riachuelo - The Riachuelo theater stands out with its Arabic style amidst modern constructions in the center. This neo-Moorish architectural style is quite rare in the city.
- Escadaria Selarón - Here it is, the famous colorful staircase you’ve been anticipating! You’ve likely seen images of it before visiting, and it’s just as stunning in person as in photos!
