• Christchurch - Begin the journey by departing from Ōtautahi Christchurch, also known as New Zealand’s Garden City. As the tour moves inland, the knowledgeable guide will highlight some of the central city attractions.
• Castle Hill - Castle Hill, or Kura Tāwhiti, is one of Canterbury’s most iconic landscapes. Renowned for its scenery that inspired Middle Earth™, nearby Flock Hill, which shares its geology with Castle Hill, became a filming location for The Chronicles of Narnia - The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. The weathered limestone rocks stand proudly amidst the tussocky hills that were once submerged in the ocean. Over time, they have eroded into the unique shapes seen today. While exploring the rocks, visitors might spot climbers and boulderers who frequent the area. Please note that this is a self-guided walk, allowing for personal exploration of this beautiful site.
• Lake Lyndon - The next stop is Lake Lyndon. Situated at the base of Porters Pass, Lyndon, or Te Hāpua Waikawa, is popular among jetboaters, bird watchers, and adventurous swimmers. It is known as one of the colder lakes in the area.
• Arthur’s Pass National Park - After a short drive, the tour arrives at Arthur’s Pass Village. Located 740 meters above sea level, visitors can experience the majestic Southern Alps up close. Upon arrival, there is an option to either walk to Devils Punch Bowl or enjoy a coffee while exploring the local shops.

Devils Punch Bowl - This walking track takes approximately 1 hour, with a gradual incline (including steps) leading to a spectacular 131-meter tall waterfall. The fitness level required is low to moderate as the path winds through bush and native beech forest.

• Otira Viaduct Lookout - Also known as Death’s Corner, the Otira Viaduct Lookout offers a stunning view of the National Park. This bridge is the reason driving through Arthur’s Pass is possible today. At 440 meters long, it is a remarkable engineering achievement. The lookout is an excellent spot for photos, capturing the viaduct and surrounding landscape. Keep an eye out at this stop! With some luck, a Cheeky Kea - New Zealand’s mischievous alpine parrot - might make an appearance!
• Cobden Beach - *Just a short drive from the center of Greymouth, Cobden is a beach break with a rock breakwater at its southern end, creating impressive waves that crash against the structure. It’s a rugged yet picturesque photo opportunity.
• Greymouth - *A quick stop is made in Greymouth at the Information Centre to pick up any guests who opted for the TranzAlpine from Christchurch to Greymouth (booked and sold separately). As the largest town in the Westland region, Greymouth, or Māwhera, is home to about 14,000 residents. Framed by rugged cliff tops, wild beaches, the Grey River, and the scenic Grey Valley, this charming destination is not only beautiful but also a key transit hub and community for the West Coast.
• Hokitika - This ‘Cool Little Town’ is renowned for its rugged black sand and driftwood-laden coastline. After a brief photo stop at the beach to admire the surf and views of the Tasman Sea, visitors can explore the local shops or join the group on a trip to the Hokitika Gorge.

Hokitika Gorge (1 hour) - One of the West Coast’s most iconic and photographed spots, on a clear day, its striking turquoise waters contrast beautifully with the mature native podocarp forest surrounding it. Various lookout points offer different perspectives of the enchanting river, making it a popular destination for nature enthusiasts and photographers. The track is easy and gently undulating.

• Lake Ianthe / Matahi - Surrounded by hills and native podocarp forests with a large flax swamp at its southern end, the lake is a vital habitat for endangered wetland species such as the Great Crested Grebe. Situated in a former glacial trough, the lake is encircled by a moraine and flows into the Wanganui River via Ianthe Creek. A brief stop is made here for photos before continuing to Franz Josef.
• Franz Josef - *Upon reaching Franz Josef Village, visitors can either be dropped off directly at their accommodation or continue to walk towards the famous Franz Josef Glacier and be dropped off afterward.

Franz Josef Glacier (30 minutes) - Franz Josef Glacier, or Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere, is approximately 12km long. While direct access to the glacier face is not possible, visitors can walk to the lookout and learn more about the fascinating history of this natural wonder.

Franz Josef - After visiting the glacier that shares its name with the town, the tour returns to Franz Josef township. Relax and unwind after a wonderful day exploring the Southern Alps and West Coast. With a camera roll full of memories, this day is sure to be unforgettable!
