Exploring Colón: A Journey Through Rainforests and History
Trading my surfboard for hiking boots, I embarked on a journey through Colón’s lush rainforests and historical sites. From the engineering marvel of the Panama Canal to the ancient stones of Fort San Lorenzo, this adventure was a refreshing change of pace.
A Day of Discovery in Colón
The sun was just beginning to rise over the Caribbean as I found myself in Colón, Panama, ready to embark on a day of exploration. As a seasoned traveler and surfer, I’ve spent countless days chasing waves and writing about the best surf spots in Central America. But today was different. Today, I was trading my surfboard for a pair of hiking boots and a camera, ready to dive into the lush rainforests and historical sites of Colón.
The day began with a bit of a hiccup. I found myself momentarily panicked, unable to locate my guide. But a few quick messages through WhatsApp, and I was soon greeted by a friendly face holding a sign with my name. With a sigh of relief, I boarded the bus, ready for the adventure that lay ahead.
Our first stop was the Agua Clara Locks, part of the Panama Canal Expansion. As someone who spends most of his time in the ocean, the engineering marvel of the canal was a sight to behold. I wandered down to the lock area, mesmerized by the sheer size of the cargo ships passing through. I only wish I had more time to explore the shaded trail nearby, but the day was just beginning.
Fort San Lorenzo: A Step Back in Time
Next, we journeyed to the historic Fort San Lorenzo. Perched on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean, the fort was a testament to Panama’s rich history. Our guide, Alonzo, shared tales of pirate attacks and colonial battles, bringing the ancient stones to life. As I wandered through the ruins, I couldn’t help but imagine the waves crashing against the cliffs below, a reminder of the ocean’s ever-present allure.
The fort was a highlight of the day, but the adventure was far from over. Due to a change in plans, Alonzo offered us a choice: return to the port or join him for a guided tour through the rainforest. As a lover of nature and adventure, the decision was easy. Along with two other intrepid travelers, I set off into the jungle, eager to see what lay beyond the beaten path.
Into the Heart of the Rainforest
The rainforest was alive with the sounds of nature. Monkeys chattered in the trees, and the air was thick with the scent of damp earth and foliage. Alonzo’s knowledge of the flora and fauna was impressive, and I found myself captivated by his stories of the creatures that called this place home.
Our journey through the jungle led us to a secluded beach, a hidden gem that felt like a world away from the bustling port. As I stood on the sand, the waves lapping at my feet, I was reminded of why I fell in love with travel in the first place. It’s moments like these, away from the crowds and the chaos, that make the journey worthwhile.
As we made our way back to the port, our driver made a quick stop at the top of Centennial Bridge, allowing me to capture one last photo of the breathtaking view. It was the perfect end to a day filled with discovery and adventure.
Reflecting on the experience, I can’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore a different side of Panama. The Cruiseline Excursion was more than just a tour; it was a chance to connect with the land and its history, to step outside my comfort zone and embrace the unknown. For anyone looking to experience the beauty and wonder of Colón, I highly recommend it.
