Surfing Through History: A Day in Panama’s Dual Oceans

As a surfer always chasing the next wave, I couldn’t resist the chance to explore both the Caribbean and Pacific sides of Panama in one day. Join me as I dive into the rich history and modern marvels of this unique tour.

A Journey Through Time and Tides

As a professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours chasing the perfect wave, but this time, I found myself drawn to a different kind of water adventure. The allure of experiencing both the Caribbean and Pacific sides of Panama in a single day was too tempting to resist. So, I signed up for the Panama City and Miraflores Locks Tour and embarked on a journey that promised not just scenic views, but a deep dive into history.

Our guide, Milton, was a maestro of the past, weaving tales of Panama’s rich history as we made our way to the canal. His enthusiasm was infectious, and it wasn’t long before I was as captivated by the stories of the canal’s construction as I am by the perfect swell. Milton’s knowledge was vast, and his passion for sharing it was evident. He even quizzed us along the way, turning the drive into an interactive history lesson that kept us all engaged.

The Heartbeat of Panama City

After securing our canal tickets, we ventured into the heart of Panama City. The contrast between the old and new was striking. Casco Viejo, with its colonial charm, felt like stepping back in time. The cobblestone streets and vibrant architecture were a feast for the eyes, and I couldn’t help but imagine the stories these buildings could tell. As we wandered through the historic district, Milton’s insights added layers of depth to the experience, painting a vivid picture of Panama’s evolution.

The modern skyline of Panama City was equally impressive, a testament to the country’s growth and ambition. As someone who spends most of his time in laid-back beach towns, the hustle and bustle of the city was a refreshing change of pace. Yet, even amidst the towering skyscrapers, there was a sense of calm, a reminder of the ocean’s ever-present influence.

Witnessing Engineering Marvels

Returning to the canal, we bypassed the long lines, thanks to Milton’s foresight. The Miraflores Locks were a marvel to behold. Watching the massive vessels navigate the locks was a humbling experience, a reminder of human ingenuity and the power of nature. Milton’s explanations brought the process to life, and I found myself in awe of the engineering feat that is the Panama Canal.

The IMAX movie added another layer to the experience, offering a cinematic glimpse into the canal’s history and significance. As I stood on the viewing platform, watching the ships rise and fall with the water, I felt a deep connection to the ocean, even though I was miles away from the surf.

This tour was more than just a sightseeing excursion; it was a journey through time, a chance to witness the intersection of history and modernity. For anyone looking to explore Panama beyond its waves, this is an adventure not to be missed.
