• Dunluce Castle - Perched on a basalt outcrop along the north coast of Antrim, this castle was once the stronghold of Clan MacDonnell, serving as a medieval fortress against invaders from both land and sea. Constructed in the 13th century, it has witnessed significant events in Irish history, with influences from Viking, Christian, and British eras. Visitors can admire its rugged beauty against the Northern Atlantic Ocean, where it stands as a sentinel. The castle is steeped in haunting tales of crumbling walls and eerie ghosts. Recently, it featured in the Game of Thrones TV series as the great Pyke, the seat of House Greyjoy. Dunluce also inspired C.S. Lewis’s descriptions of Cair Paravel in Narnia and appeared in Jackie Chan’s movie ‘The Medallion.’ Although it might be the first stop of the day, Dunluce Castle is sure to leave a lasting impression.
• Giant’s Causeway - Discover the heart of Ireland’s ancient mythological landscape at the otherworldly Giant’s Causeway. Walk among the towering pillars of what was once an epic bridge to Scotland, built by the legendary Finn McCool. Legend has it that Finn constructed this bridge to confront a formidable Scottish giant. Some claim that ‘Nature doesn’t work in straight lines,’ but those who do have never visited the Giant’s Causeway. This area boasts over 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, mostly hexagonal, with up to eight sides. This breathtaking landscape appears to be crafted by a giant’s hand, yet it was naturally formed by the slow cooling of lava from an eruption millions of years ago.
• The Dark Hedges - Our third stop of the day, The Dark Hedges, attracts visitors from around the globe. Known as one of Ireland’s most iconic roads, this avenue leads to Gracehill House, built around 1775. James Stuart, who constructed the house, also created the road and planted the beech trees that now form an atmospheric tunnel overhead, filled with the creaking of branches and dappled light filtering through the canopy. The Dark Hedges are said to be haunted by a mysterious ghost known as The Grey Lady. Made famous by their appearance in Game of Thrones as the King’s Road, they also featured in the 2017 movie Transformers: The Last Knight. Whether you’re interested in Autobots, ghosts, King Robert Baratheon, or simply a stroll down this enchanting avenue, The Dark Hedges offer something for everyone.
• City Hall - Belfast, the capital city of Northern Ireland, was once known as ‘Linenopolis’ and ‘Old Smoke’ due to its significant industrial history. As the second-largest city on the island, visitors are dropped off at the heart of it by City Hall. Explore City Hall, admire the lantern atop its 173 ft (53 m) dome, and learn about its reconstruction after the Belfast Blitz during World War II. Belfast is a city of convergence, where the diverse facets of Ireland come together. It stands out as a unique place to explore and experience. From shipbuilding to the complex history of The Troubles, there is much history to discover here in stone, iron, and among its people.
