- Lunuganga Garden Tour - The first stop on the itinerary is Bawa’s estate in Lunuganga. Sir Geoffrey Bawa, the esteemed lawyer turned architect, made this estate his country home from 1947 until his passing in 1998. During his time there, he used the estate as an experimental lab, adding many architectural and interior features. Visitors can explore the beautifully designed gardens, now open to the public. Some estate buildings have been converted into a country house hotel. The estate tour lasts approximately two hours.
- Madu Ganga Biodiversity Area - Next, head to Balapitiya by 1:00 PM for a delightful Boat Safari on the Madu River. Balapitiya is a small southern town situated in marshy wetlands. The area is a biodiversity hotspot, relying on the lagoon formed by the Madu River as it flows into the Indian Ocean. The safari offers a ride down the river, showcasing the dense mangrove forests along the marshy banks and the wildlife inhabiting the roots. The guide will also take you to some of the larger islands on the Madu River, including one with an ancient Buddhist monastery.
- Meetiyagoda - Then, proceed to Meetiyagoda by around 12:00 PM to visit the Moonstone Mines. Spend an hour gaining a new appreciation for the jewels that adorn your favorite pieces with a visit to the moonstone mines of Meetiyagoda. Observe the deep shafts where the stones are mined and learn about the rare ‘blue flash’ moonstones found in the area. Watch miners wash and sift the stones to select the best quality. Hear about the challenges faced by the miners and seize the opportunity to purchase some stunning pieces, though bargaining is necessary for a fair price. This tour highlights the traditions of one of Sri Lanka’s oldest trades - gem mining.
