Due to its geopolitical and strategic position, Ston boasts a rich history dating back to ancient times. The fortress of Ston was one of the largest construction projects of its time, originally spanning 7000 meters, comprising the walls of Ston and Little Ston. The Great Wall includes three fortresses, with walls and fortresses flanked by 10 rounds of 31 squares and 6 semi-circular bastions. The complex defense system evolved over four centuries due to advancements in weaponry. The walls were crucial in defending the saltworks, which contributed 15,900 ducats annually to the Dubrovnik Republic, as well as the shellfish farm and the city itself.
