Dumbarton Castle - Departing from Glasgow and heading west towards Loch Lomond, the first stop on the tour is Dumbarton Castle, which boasts the oldest recorded history of any Scottish fortress. Its history dates back to the 5th century when Saint Patrick sent a letter to King Ceretic, marking the first written mention of a settlement there. Since then, it has been visited by Viking Kings, William Wallace, Mary Queen of Scots, and Queen Elizabeth II.
-
Luss - After leaving Dumbarton, it’s a short drive to the first view of ‘The Bonnie, Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond,’ a phrase from the Scottish folk song “You take the High Road and I’ll take the Low Road.” Loch Lomond has the largest surface area of any lake on the British mainland, stretching over 23 miles. Just 10 minutes later, the tour stops at Luss, one of Scotland’s most popular villages. Visitors can stroll past charming sandstone and slate cottages to the pier for stunning views of Loch Lomond and the surrounding mountains. From the pier, it’s a brief walk to the atmospheric church graveyard, which features graves dating back to 600AD/700AD, including a Viking hogback gravestone.
-
Glengoyne Distillery - The route to Stirling from Loch Lomond is particularly scenic, featuring picturesque villages, grand views, and an optional stop at Glengoyne Distillery, if desired. This quick stop allows visitors to admire the beautiful buildings, shop, and yard filled with whisky casks.
-
Stirling Castle - As the tour approaches Stirling from the west, both the Castle and The Wallace Monument become visible from afar. Stirling Castle is one of the largest and most significant castles in Scotland, both historically and architecturally. Perched high on a volcanic outcrop, it guards the lowest crossing point of the River Forth. There is much to explore and enjoy within the castle.
-
National Wallace Monument - Just an 8-minute drive from the Castle, this iconic monument stands 220 feet high atop Abbey Craig hill, overlooking the fields where Wallace led his troops to victory at The Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297. The monument features 276 steps to the top. A short drive from The Wallace Monument leads to Stirling Bridge. The current Stirling Bridge, built in the 1400s, replaced a series of timber bridges. In 1297, William Wallace defeated Edward I’s forces at The Battle of Stirling Bridge. Today, the bridge is one of the finest medieval masonry arch bridges in Scotland.
-
The Battle of Bannockburn Experience - A visit to Bannockburn, where in 1314, King Robert the Bruce and his army achieved the most famous victory in Scottish history, is highly recommended. A short walk to the statue of King Robert The Bruce, with Stirling Castle as a backdrop, is worthwhile. There is also a visitor experience available for an entrance fee.
The tour can be customized as well. If there are specific places you wish to visit or experiences you want to include, such as Glasgow Cathedral, Necropolis, or Glasgow University, please let us know, and we will do our best to incorporate them into your tour.
