- Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park - Begin your day at the entrance of the cruise arrivals hall at Greenock Ocean Terminal. The first stop on the tour is Dumbarton Castle, which boasts the oldest recorded history of any Scottish fortress, dating back to the 5th century when Saint Patrick sent a letter to King Ceretic. This was the first written mention of a settlement there. Since then, Viking Kings, William Wallace, Mary Queen of Scots, and Queen Elizabeth II have visited.
Leaving Dumbarton, enjoy a short drive to your first glimpse of ‘The Bonnie of Loch Lomond.’ Loch Lomond has the largest surface area of any lake on the British mainland, stretching over 23 miles. Just 10 minutes later, we stop at Luss, one of Scotland’s most popular villages. Stroll past charming sandstone and slate cottages to the pier for stunning views of Loch Lomond. From the pier, it’s a brief walk to the atmospheric church graveyard, featuring graves dating back to 600AD/700AD, including a Viking hogback gravestone.
-
Stirling Castle - As you approach Stirling from the west, the Castle and The Wallace Monument are visible from afar. Stirling Castle is one of the largest and most significant castles in Scotland, both historically and architecturally. The castle sits atop a volcanic outcrop, guarding the lowest crossing point of the River Forth. There is much to explore and enjoy within the castle.
-
National Wallace Monument - It’s a 10-minute drive to the Wallace Monument, following a route down the long steep hill from the Castle, through the old town, and past Old Stirling Bridge. The Bridge, built in the 1400s, replaced a series of timber bridges. In 1297, William Wallace defeated Edward I’s forces at The Battle of Stirling Bridge. Today, the bridge is one of the finest medieval masonry arch bridges in Scotland.
The Wallace Monument stands 220 feet high on Abbey Craig hill, overlooking the fields where Wallace led his troops to victory in The Battle of Stirling Bridge. There are 276 steps to the top, but the climb is well worth it.
