DARVAZ - An administrative district within the Gorno–Badakhshan Autonomous Region of Tajikistan. The district center is the village of Kalai Khumb, situated at an altitude of 1200 meters above sea level, near the confluence of the Obikhumbov River in the Panj, 368 km from Dushanbe, on the border with Afghanistan. “Darvaz” means “gate” and originated in the 9th—10th centuries.
Castle Karon - ANCIENT CITY KARON. The city’s name translates from Middle Persian as “a place located at an altitude”. Karon is situated east of the village of Kalai Khumb in the historical region of Darvaz, on the ancient caravan route to Khorog, at an altitude of 2000 meters above sea level, in the highlands above the Panj River, near the Tajik-Afghan border. The city covers an area of 100 hectares. In the central square, an altar of the temple of fire, a ritual pool, and a stone stand for the holy book “Avesta” were discovered. Islam reached Karon in the 12th—13th centuries. The complex of buildings is believed to be a royal palace. The structures are made of brick. The city had a water supply and drainage system. Brick firing workshops were located in the Crown, and clay pipes were produced. The city was abandoned in the 15th century, likely due to water resource depletion.

WAKHAN VALLEY
Hot Springs - • The Wakhan Valley (also known as the Wakhan Corridor) is one of the most stunning and remote regions in Asia and the world. This mountainous area belongs to the Pamir and Hindu Kush ranges, with most of it located in southeast Tajikistan and northeast Afghanistan. Historically, the Wakhan Valley was a significant principality of the renowned Kushan Empire, which extended from southeast Tajikistan to the Ganges Valley in India. Despite its mountainous terrain, the valley is home to several fortresses perched on high hills, offering breathtaking and awe-inspiring views. The region historically served as a boundary between western and eastern Asia, making the valley an important Silk Road route.
