From Markets to Memories: A Culinary Adventure in Hội An

In search of a unique cultural experience, I embarked on a journey to Hội An to join Kien Nguyen’s renowned cooking class. Little did I know, this adventure would transport me back to the nostalgic days of exploring small-town markets and river adventures.

A Journey Through the Market

As the sun began to rise over Hội An, my husband and I found ourselves eagerly awaiting the start of a new adventure. We were picked up by Kien Nguyen, a man whose passion for Vietnamese cuisine was as vibrant as the bustling market he took us to. The market was a sensory overload, with the chatter of vendors, the vibrant colors of exotic fruits, and the tantalizing aromas of fresh herbs and spices. It reminded me of the roadside farmers’ markets I used to visit during my road trips across the Midwest, where each stall had its own story to tell.

Kien guided us through the maze of stalls, introducing us to ingredients that were both foreign and fascinating. I was particularly taken by the dragon fruit, its bright pink skin a stark contrast to the more familiar apples and oranges of my youth. As we moved from stall to stall, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia for the days when my family and I would explore small-town markets, discovering local delicacies and hidden gems.

A River Adventure

After our market tour, we were whisked away to the serene waters of the Cam Thanh fishing village. Here, we boarded a traditional round bamboo boat, known as a thung chai, and set off on a journey through the coconut forest waterways. Our guide, a cheerful local woman, sang traditional songs as she expertly paddled us along the river. Her voice, combined with the gentle lapping of the water against the boat, created a symphony that transported me back to the lazy summer days spent on the Mississippi River.

As we glided through the water, we watched fishermen casting their nets, a scene that felt both timeless and deeply connected to the land. It was a reminder of the simple pleasures of life, much like the quiet moments spent on the open road, where the journey itself is as rewarding as the destination.

Cooking with Heart

The highlight of our day was undoubtedly the cooking class itself. Kien’s enthusiasm was infectious as he demonstrated each dish, from fresh spring rolls to crispy pancakes. We were each given our own workstations, complete with aprons and chef’s hats, and encouraged to dive in. The process of grinding rice and making rice paper was both challenging and rewarding, much like the art of crafting the perfect road trip itinerary.

Under Kien’s watchful eye, we prepared a feast fit for kings. Each dish was a testament to the rich culinary heritage of Vietnam, and as we sat down to enjoy our creations, I was reminded of the communal meals shared with fellow travelers at roadside diners. The food was delicious, and the experience was made even more special by the thoughtful gift of a recipe book and a special peeler, a memento of a day well spent.

As we made our way back to our hotel, I couldn’t help but reflect on the parallels between this experience and my own travels across America. Both journeys were filled with discovery, connection, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life. If you ever find yourself in Hội An, I highly recommend joining Kien’s cooking class for a day of culinary adventure and heartfelt memories.
