- Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum - Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park (平和記念公園, Heiwa Kinen Kōen) stands as a significant landmark in the city. Visitors, even those not specifically seeking it, are likely to encounter this expansive park, which spans over 120,000 square meters. The park’s lush trees, green lawns, and walking paths provide a striking contrast to the bustling downtown area.
Before the atomic bomb, the site of the current Peace Park was the city’s political and commercial hub. This made it the target for the bomb. Four years after the bombing, it was decided that the area would be dedicated to peace memorial facilities rather than being redeveloped.
Admission Fee: ¥200
- Hiroshima Castle - Hiroshima Castle (広島城, Hiroshimajō), also known as the Carp Castle, exemplifies a castle built on a plain in the heart of a city, unlike those on hills or mountains. The main keep rises five stories high, and the grounds are encircled by a moat. Within the castle’s area, there is a shrine, some ruins, and a few reconstructed buildings of the Ninomaru (second circle of defense).
Hiroshima evolved as a castle town, with the castle serving as both the physical and economic center. Constructed in 1589 by the influential feudal lord Mori Terumoto, Hiroshima Castle was a vital seat of power in Western Japan. Although it escaped the fate of many castles demolished during the Meiji Restoration, it was destroyed by the atomic bomb in 1945, along with much of the city.
- Shukkei-en Garden - Shukkeien is a Japanese garden in Hiroshima, recognized as one of Japan’s Top 100 Historical Parks and a National Scenic Spot. Renowned for its compact yet intricate design, Shukkeien beautifully embodies traditional Japanese garden aesthetics with its winding paths, tranquil ponds, and carefully arranged landscapes.
