The journey starts at Mt. Hekla, one of Iceland’s most active volcanoes. It earned the nickname “The Gateway to Hell” following its 1104 eruption. This reputation was further solidified with the 1341 eruption, when people reported seeing birds flying amidst the flames, with some believing these to be souls from hell. Even today, some maintain that Hekla retains its sinister reputation, claiming it is where witches meet the devil!
