A Spiritual Sojourn Through Jordan’s Northern Gems

Embark on a spiritual journey through Jordan’s northern gems, exploring ancient ruins and medieval castles. Discover the rich tapestry of history and culture that awaits in Jerash, Ajloun, and Umm Qais.

A Journey Through Time: Jerash and Beyond

As the sun rose over Amman, I embarked on a journey that promised to be both enlightening and spiritually enriching. The allure of Jordan’s northern gems had long beckoned me, and the opportunity to explore the ancient Roman ruins of Jerash, the medieval Ajloun Castle, and the Greco-Roman city of Umm Qais was irresistible. Our guide for the day, Faisal, greeted us with a warm smile and a cup of Turkish coffee, setting the tone for a day filled with discovery and reflection.

Our first stop was Jerash, a city that seemed to whisper the secrets of its past through its well-preserved ruins. As we wandered through the colonnaded streets and stood before the majestic Temple of Artemis, I couldn’t help but feel a deep connection to the history that unfolded here. Faisal’s insights into the city’s evolution from a Greek federation to a thriving Roman metropolis, and its eventual decline during the Crusades, painted a vivid picture of resilience and transformation. The grandeur of Hadrian’s Arch and the oval plaza left me in awe, reminding me of the enduring legacy of human ingenuity and faith.

The Echoes of History: Ajloun Castle

Leaving Jerash, we journeyed to Ajloun Castle, a fortress that stood as a testament to the strategic brilliance of Saladin’s forces. Perched atop a hill, the castle offered breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys, a sight that stirred a sense of peace and contemplation within me. As we explored the towers and chambers, Faisal shared stories of the castle’s role in defending against the Crusaders, weaving a narrative of courage and unity that resonated deeply with my own understanding of history.

The architecture of Ajloun Castle, with its intricate designs and robust fortifications, spoke of a time when faith and determination shaped the course of events. Standing in the tower, gazing out over the Jordan Valley, I felt a profound connection to the past, a reminder of the spiritual journeys that have traversed these lands for centuries. Faisal’s thoughtful guidance and the delicious shawarma wraps he provided for lunch added a personal touch to the experience, making it all the more memorable.

A Tapestry of Cultures: Umm Qais

Our final destination was Umm Qais, a city that beautifully juxtaposes Roman ruins with an abandoned Ottoman-era village. The panoramic views from this vantage point, encompassing Jordan, Syria, and the Palestinian Territories, were nothing short of breathtaking. As I stood there, I reflected on the interconnectedness of these lands, each with its own rich tapestry of history and culture.

Faisal’s narration of the biblical miracle of the Gadarene swine added a spiritual dimension to our visit, inviting contemplation on the mysteries of faith and the enduring power of belief. The ruins of Gadara, with their silent stories of past civilizations, served as a poignant reminder of the transient nature of human endeavors and the eternal quest for meaning.

As we made our way back to Amman, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of history, guided by Faisal’s wisdom and kindness. This journey through Jordan’s northern gems was more than just a tour; it was a pilgrimage of the soul, a chance to connect with the past and find inspiration for the future.
