• Constitution Hill Human Rights Precinct - Constitution Hill serves as a vibrant museum narrating South Africa’s journey to democracy. It is located on the site of a former prison and military fort, reflecting the nation’s challenging history. Visitors can explore the prison museum, gaining intriguing insights into South Africa’s past, including the infamous Old Fort Prison complex, known as NUMBER FOUR. This site held numerous ordinary criminals and political prisoners, such as the late President Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Joe Slovo, Albertina Sisulu, Winnie Mandela, and Fatima Meer, who faced harsh treatment before democracy was achieved. Guests can also visit South Africa’s highest court, the Constitutional Court, on a guided tour if it is not in session.
• Baragwanath - The tour continues with a drive over the impressive Mandela Bridge in Johannesburg, heading towards Soweto. Entering Soweto through Diepkloof Extension, visitors learn about the area’s history and demographics. The tour passes Baragwanath Hospital, the largest hospital in Southern Africa and the third largest globally, covering 7 hectares (170 acres). Baragwanath Hospital serves as a teaching facility for Witwatersrand Medical University and all provincial hospitals in Johannesburg.
• Vilakazi Street - Vilakazi Street is a renowned attraction with significant historical importance. It is the only street worldwide where two Nobel Prize winners once resided. The homes of the late President Mandela and the late Archbishop Tutu are located here. Visitors have time to explore the flea market, offering clothes, artifacts, and curios. Sakhumzi Restaurant, near Mandela House, offers a buffet lunch featuring South African cuisine, including dumplings, rice, pap, samp, and tripe. Other dishes include beef stew, sausages, chicken, vegetables, salads, and desserts. Light lunch options are also available, with lunch being optional.
• Mandela House - Mandela House on Vilakazi Street, Soweto, was constructed in 1945 by the Johannesburg City Council. Nelson Mandela lived here before his imprisonment. The house offers a meaningful experience, educating visitors about Nelson Mandela’s life and promoting human rights, democracy, reconciliation, mutual respect, and tolerance among South Africans. Guests can enjoy a guided tour of Mandela House.
• Orlando Towers - Orlando Towers are iconic landmarks in Soweto. Originally cooling towers for a coal-powered station that supplied electricity to Johannesburg for over 50 years, the station closed in 1998 and was converted into an entertainment and sports center in 2008. The towers are vibrantly painted and often used for advertising by various companies.
