Chitwan National Park safeguards 56 mammal species including the one-horned rhinoceros, Bengal Tiger, leopard, sloth bear, wild elephant, striped hyena, Gangetic dolphin, and wild bison.
Estimations point to a variety of species within the park, including different bird species, 126 fish species, 590 butterfly species, and 47 reptile species. The park consists mostly of sal forest mixed with expansive grasslands, small hills, ox-bow lakes, and flood plains.
