Nairobi – Mt Kenya Road Head (3300m) 7 km 350m ascent.
Mount Kenya - Nairobi to Road Head (3300m) takes approximately 4 hours, with a 350m ascent over a distance of 7 km. The journey begins with a morning departure from Nairobi, heading to Mount Kenya Bandas for lunch. This 4-hour drive offers a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the lush agricultural landscapes of Kenya.
Post-lunch, the hike towards Chogoria Road Head camp begins along a dirt road. This trek provides breathtaking views of the Giant’s Billiards Table, Ithanguni, and Mugi Hill, unique formations found only on Kenya’s highest mountain. Alternatively, there is a 3 km riverside path to Road Head, adorned with stunning flora.
Upon arrival at Road Head, dinner is served, followed by an overnight stay at the campsite.
Mt Kenya Road Head– Minto’s Campsite (4,200m) 10 km, 900m ascent.
Mount Kenya - From Road Head Campsite to Minto’s Camp (4,200M) takes 5-6 hours, covering 10 km with a 900m ascent. The hike begins early to ensure arrival at Minto’s camp before nightfall. Despite the challenging trek, there is ample time to enjoy Chogoria’s renowned views, including Gorges Valley, Muga Hills, and the Giant Billiards Table.
During the hike, there are stops at streams and rivers for water breaks and bottle refills. A picnic lunch is enjoyed with views of the expansive plains below and snow-capped peaks ahead. Dinner and an overnight stay are at Minto’s camp.
Minto’s – Pt. Lenana (4,985m) – Old Moses Camp (3,300m) 785m ascent, 24km, 1,685m descent
Mount Kenya - From Minto’s Camp to Point Lenana (4,985m) and then to Old Moses Camp (3,300m) takes 11-12 hours, covering 24 km with a 785m ascent and a 1,685m descent. The day begins at 3 AM to reach the summit for the African sunrise. After breakfast, the hike continues along a rocky path leading to Point Lenana. At the peak, the sunrise gradually illuminates the mountain and the expansive landscapes below.
Following the summit, the descent is via the Sirimon route, a gentle and scenic path offering a pleasant hiking experience with views of Mackinder’s Valley.
The trek concludes at Old Moses camp, where dinner is served, marking the final night on Mount Kenya.
Judmier Camp-Sirimon Gate -Nairobi, 9km
Mount Kenya - A gentle descent to the Sirimon gate after breakfast takes about 2 hours, or 3 at most, where a vehicle awaits to transport back to Nairobi.
