Setting Sail on the Alaskan Waters

The moment I stepped onto the rugged Zodiac expedition craft, I felt a familiar thrill coursing through my veins. The anticipation of exploring the deep, mysterious waters of Ketchikan was palpable. As a marine biologist, the ocean has always been my sanctuary, and this adventure promised to be a blend of serenity and exhilaration. Our journey began at the historic Thomas Street in downtown Ketchikan, where we were warmly greeted by our captain, Eric, and our onboard naturalist, Jenny. Their enthusiasm was infectious, and I knew we were in for an unforgettable experience.

Outfitted in rain gear and life jackets, we embarked on our journey into the Tongass Narrows. The Zodiac craft skimmed across the waves, the salty sea air invigorating my senses. A Symphony of Wildlife

The waters surrounding Ketchikan are a haven for wildlife, and our expedition did not disappoint. Within the first hour, we were treated to the awe-inspiring sight of two Humpback Whales engaging in bubble net feeding. The sheer power and grace of these magnificent creatures left me breathless. As we continued our journey, we encountered Harbor Porpoises playfully darting through the waves, and Harbor Seals lounging on the rocky shores.

For a birder like myself, the avian life was equally captivating. The skies were alive with the calls of Bald Eagles, their majestic forms silhouetted against the towering evergreens of the Tongass National Forest. Among the more elusive species, we spotted the Black Turnstone, Marbled Murrelet, and Pigeon Guillemot, each a delightful addition to my “life list.” Jenny’s expertise as a naturalist was invaluable, her knowledge enriching our understanding of the diverse birdlife that thrives in this nutrient-rich region.

A Return to Ketchikan

As our expedition drew to a close, we made our way back to the working waterfront of Ketchikan. The town’s vibrant history and culture were evident in every corner, a testament to the resilience and spirit of this unique island community. Eric’s skillful navigation ensured we had ample opportunities to capture the perfect photographs, mindful of the sun’s placement and the safety of the wildlife.
