A Journey Through Kigali’s Heart

Arriving in Kigali, the vibrant capital of Rwanda, I was immediately struck by the city’s unique blend of tradition and modernity. As a wildlife photographer, my travels often take me to remote corners of the world, but Kigali offered a different kind of adventure—one that promised to reveal the soul of a nation through its history, culture, and people. The Kigali Cultural Tour was my gateway to this experience, and it did not disappoint.

Our journey began at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a place of profound reflection and learning. Walking through the exhibits, I was moved by the stories of resilience and hope that emerged from the darkest chapter in Rwanda’s history. Our next stop was the Umurishyo cultural center, where I had the chance to participate in a traditional drumming session. The rhythms of the Inkiranya, Impurumpuru, and Amashako drums resonated through the air, creating a lively and interactive experience. As I joined in the performance, I felt a sense of unity with the other participants, a shared celebration of Rwanda’s artistic heritage. This immersive experience was a highlight of the tour, leaving me with a deeper appreciation for the country’s cultural richness.

After a delightful lunch at Éképaka, where I savored local delicacies like grilled meats and plantains, we continued our exploration of Kigali’s modern developments. Walking through the Car-Free Zone, I was impressed by the city’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. The vibrant street art and local businesses showcased Kigali’s urban charm, a testament to its vision for the future.

Our final stop was the Inema Art Center, a hub of creativity and expression. Here, I was captivated by the bold colors and local stories that came to life through the artwork. The center is a reflection of Rwanda’s dynamic art scene, a place where tradition meets contemporary expression.
