A Journey Through Kigali and Beyond

Arriving in Kigali, the vibrant heart of Rwanda, I was immediately struck by the city’s blend of modernity and tradition. The streets buzzed with life, and the air was filled with the aroma of local cuisine. My journey began with a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a poignant reminder of the country’s past. The experience was deeply moving, and it set the tone for the rest of my adventure, reminding me of the resilience and beauty of this land.

Our guide, Samuel, was a fountain of knowledge, sharing stories of Rwanda’s history and culture as we made our way to Akagera National Park. The drive was a scenic one, with rolling hills and lush landscapes stretching as far as the eye could see. We made a delightful stop at the Imigongo Art Center, where I indulged in a delicious lunch and admired the intricate handcrafts. The anticipation built as we approached the park, knowing that the wonders of the African wilderness awaited us.

The Thrill of the Safari

Akagera National Park is a sanctuary for some of Africa’s most iconic wildlife, and I was eager to capture its beauty through my lens. The safari began with a sunset boat trip on Lake Ihema, where the golden hues of the setting sun danced on the water’s surface. The following days were a whirlwind of excitement as we embarked on game drives through the park. The thrill of spotting a rhino in the wild was unparalleled, and I was reminded of the importance of conservation efforts to protect these magnificent creatures. Our accommodations at the Mantis Akagera Game Lodge and Karenge Bush Camp were a perfect blend of comfort and authenticity, offering a serene retreat after a day of adventure.

A Balloon Ride to Remember

Though I initially hesitated to indulge in the hot air balloon ride, the allure of seeing Akagera from above was too tempting to resist. As dawn broke, we ascended into the sky, the landscape unfolding beneath us in a breathtaking panorama. The sight of elephants and antelope roaming the savannah as the sun painted the horizon in shades of gold was a moment of pure magic. The experience was crowned with a champagne breakfast, a fitting celebration of the journey we had undertaken.
