While commonly referred to as Chinese fishing nets in India, the formal term is shore-operated lift nets. Large stones act as counterweights, operated by a team of up to six fishermen. Although prevalent in coastal southern China and Indochina, in India, they are primarily found in Kochi and Kollam, where they have become a popular tourist attraction. This unique fishing method was introduced by Chinese explorers in the 14th century, and one interpretation of the name Kochi is ‘co-chin’, meaning like China.
