- Buckingham Palace - Since 1837, Buckingham Palace has been the official London residence of the UK’s monarchs and currently serves as the administrative headquarters of the Monarch. It remains a functional building and the heart of the UK’s constitutional monarchy, hosting numerous royal events and ceremonies, from welcoming foreign Heads of State to celebrating achievements at Investitures and receptions.
- Houses of Parliament - Officially known as the Palace of Westminster, it is the meeting place for both the House of Commons and the House of Lords, the two houses of the UK Parliament. Both Houses represent UK citizens by scrutinizing and challenging the Government’s work, crafting effective laws, and debating and deciding on significant national issues.
- Westminster Abbey - Serving as the coronation church since 1066, Westminster Abbey is the final resting place of 17 monarchs and has hosted 16 Royal weddings. The current church was initiated by Henry III in 1245 and is a significant Gothic structure, featuring the medieval shrine of an Anglo-Saxon saint. Today, it remains a church dedicated to regular worship and national celebrations. Known as the Collegiate Church of St Peter, Westminster, it is a “Royal Peculiar” under the jurisdiction of a Dean and Chapter, answerable only to the Sovereign.
- St. Paul’s Cathedral - For over 1,400 years, a Cathedral dedicated to St Paul has stood at the highest point in the City. It has been central to national events, where traditions are upheld and new ideas are expressed under its iconic dome. The current Cathedral, designed by Sir Christopher Wren, is at least the fourth on this site, built after the Great Fire of London in 1666, with services starting in 1697. It was the first Cathedral constructed after the English Reformation, when Henry VIII separated the Church of England from the Pope’s authority.
- Tower of London - A Palace, a Prison, a place of Execution! An Armoury, an Observatory, and a Royal Zoo. Three Queens of England were executed here: Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard, and Lady Jane Grey. The Tower houses the Crown Jewels, used in all coronations of Kings and Queens.
- Tower Bridge - Tower Bridge is a well-known London landmark, often mistaken for London Bridge, located about 0.5 miles (0.80 km) upstream, leading to a popular urban legend about an American buying the wrong bridge. Several stunt pilots have flown beneath it.
- Horse Guards Parade at Whitehall - Originally the official entrance to both St James’s Palace and Buckingham Palace. Members of the Household Cavalry, either the Blues and Royals or the Lifeguards (Kings Troop in July), mount a Guard here, with the Guard changing at 11 am daily and an inspection at 4 pm. Until the late 19th century, Horseguards was the British Army’s HQ and remains the official HQ for Army units in London.
- Downing Street - The residence of the British Prime Minister since 1732.
- Trafalgar Square - Trafalgar Square has been a gathering and rallying point for demonstrations and celebrations since 1830, with Nelson’s Column as its focal point, standing over 169 feet tall.
