The historic walled city is situated on the west bank of the River Foyle, connected by two road bridges and a footbridge. The city now spans both banks (Cityside on the west and Waterside on the east). According to the 2001 Census, the city’s population was 83,652, with the Derry Urban Area having 90,736 residents. Derry is near the border with County Donegal, with which it has maintained a close relationship for centuries. Saint Colmcille, a revered figure from Tír Chonaill (the former name for most of modern County Donegal), is traditionally recognized as the founder of the original Derry.

• Peace Bridge - The Peace Bridge is a pedestrian and cycle bridge spanning the River Foyle in Derry, Northern Ireland. Opened on June 25, 2011, it links Ebrington Square with the city center. It is the newest of the city’s three bridges, alongside the Craigavon Bridge and the Foyle Bridge. The 235-meter (771 ft) bridge was designed by AECOM, also responsible for the Sutong Yangtze River Bridge, and Wilkinson Eyre Architects, known for the Gateshead Millennium Bridge.

The bridge offers views of both riverbanks and a passing train. It was inaugurated by EU Commissioner for Regional Policy, Johannes Hahn, with First and deputy First Ministers, Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness, and Irish Taoiseach Enda Kenny. The bridge aims to enhance relations between the predominantly unionist ‘Waterside’ and the largely nationalist ‘Cityside’ by improving connectivity as part of broader regeneration efforts. It also provides a crossing over the railway line near Waterside station.

The bridge’s funding was a collaborative effort between the Department for Social Development (NI), the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government, and matching funds totaling £14 million from the SEUPB Peace III program.
