Especially for Guernica. But also everything else... - Last visit to a museum in Madrid, that of Queen Sofia. Named after Sophie of Greece, Queen of Spain and wife of King Juan-Carlos I. It is a museum of contemporary art that covers the 20th century to the present day. The architect is Jean Nouvel. There are mainly Spanish painters, such as Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Juan Gris or Pablo Picasso. But also contemporary foreign artists, Francis Bacon, Braque, Andy Warhol, Magritte, Roy Lichtenstein, Fernand Léger and Max Ernst. Many posters too. But the public mainly travels to admire Dali's masterpiece, Guernica, painted in 1937 to denounce the bombing of this city during the Spanish Civil War. Gigantic painting, 3.5 meters high by nearly 8 meters long, it gives off a very strong emotion.

Definitely visit - Our tour guide was excellent! The artists and their paintings in chronological order, she told a story and explained the reasons why they painted what they did. Very informative for a non artistic couple. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour.

A great place to see Picasso Dali and many others. - Guernica was the main primadona but there is so much more interesting display of artistic works. Unfortunately things are not displayed in any order so you just have to know what you want to see and wander around. Having a guide is so much more helpful to navigate the building.

Interesting - Overall we enjoyed the tour , the guide was very informative however at times too much detail rather than seeing more highlights. Annoyingly the tour started 35 minutes late so we had to leave early due to other plans which was disappointing. Also the meeting place was not the entrance we entered by. There is nowhere to sit inside the galleries whilst listening. No large bags or drinks allowed, need to use lockers.

This museum is all about Picasso’s Guernica - The Guernica is huge and powerful and demands your attention. I saw it on a day when the news was reporting a particularly rough day of bombing in Ukraine by the Russians so the painting grabbed me. Depending your taste for 20th century modern art, the Sofia could be a 20 minute stop just to see the Guernica, or an hour or two visit.
