- Essaouira Fishing Port - A picturesque spot in the city, known for its numerous fishing boats.
- Essaouira Fish Market - A must-visit location, the fish market offers a simple yet authentic experience.
- Le Val d’Argan - Along this route, visitors will encounter one of the most fascinating sights of the journey: goats perched on the branches of Argan trees in Morocco’s largest Argan tree fields.
- Medina of Essaouira - Typically the starting point of a city tour, the Medina of Essaouira has a rich history with the Portuguese. In 1506, King Manuel I of Portugal commissioned the construction of a fortress named “Castelo Real de Mogador.” The fortress eventually fell to local resistance, leaving behind monuments and cannons facing the sea.
Essaouira is unique as the only Arab town with a historically significant Jewish population. This coastal city, approximately a 2.5-hour drive from Marrakech, offers a wonderful opportunity to unwind and enjoy the beach. The Medina of Essaouira is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The tour combines history and tradition, with a city guide (if included) showcasing the city’s highlights. Essaouira boasts long, beautiful sandy beaches.
Swimming and surfing are safe activities here. The beach hosts various activities, including local boys playing football and surfing. Beach operators offer camel rides and quad biking along the coastline. It’s an ideal chance to escape the hustle and bustle of the town and enjoy Essaouira’s cooler coastal climate.
The tour departs at 8:30 AM from your accommodation in Marrakech and returns at 7:30 PM. Throughout the journey, you’ll enjoy diverse landscapes in the surrounding countryside.
Once known as Mogador by merchants and Western sailors, Essaouira is famous for Argan Oil production, woodworking, and its annual Gnaoua Music Festival, attracting over 300,000 attendees in June. Gnaoua or Gnawa music is a rich Moroccan tradition of ancient African Islamic spiritual songs and rhythms.
Additionally, Essaouira features an extensive beach for surfing, known as Plage de Safi. The trip to this former colonial fishing town provides easy access to Berber villages along the route. Essaouira is also referred to as the Wind City of Africa and is a popular stop for the hippie trail from Marrakech. Art enthusiasts will find numerous art galleries to explore.
In the city, enjoy a leisurely walk through narrow streets. Visit the Skala du Port, the fishing harbor offering stunning views of the Portuguese ramparts. Discover a variety of spices and jewelry at the medina’s souks. Around the fishing harbor, savor fresh, delicious seafood at local restaurants.
Essaouira’s history reflects a time of change when England and Spain vied for control of its coasts. It is an exemplary colonial harbor showcasing colonial and Moorish architecture.
With a local guide, you can visit the Mellah, Cemetery, and Synagogue. Essaouira’s Mellah comprises over 10 percent of the city, with Jews making up nearly 40 percent of the population in the late 1880s. Jewish figures at the Mellah gates highlight the education Jews received, with some wealthier Jews residing outside the Mellah. Commemorative plaques mark the buildings where synagogues were located.
Our driver will ensure a visit to one of Morocco’s best Argan Oil Women’s Cooperatives, ideally located a few kilometers before reaching Essaouira, where the finest cooperatives are found.
After exploring all that Essaouira has to offer, we will return to Marrakech, arriving around 7:30 PM, where the trip concludes at your accommodation.
