The current baroque structure, constructed between 1702 and 1746 by Jakob Prandtauer, is renowned as “the most iconic and dominant baroque building,” and is among the largest in Europe. It also hosts the Abbey high school Melk, the oldest school still operating in Austria. Manuscripts in the Abbey Library of Melk reveal that a community of priests maintained a collegiate monastery under the Babenberg Margrave Leopold I between 976 and 994 AD. As a symbol of the Wachau, it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage.
- KZ-Gedenkstatte Mauthausen - The second stop is Mauthausen, where visitors explore the concentration camp and reflect on the somber history of the Nazi regime. An audio-guided tour, available in various languages, provides insight into the harsh camp life endured by the prisoners. The Mauthausen concentration camp was the largest National Socialist concentration camp in Austria from August 8, 1938, until its closure following the liberation by US troops on May 5, 1945. Approximately 200,000 individuals were imprisoned in Mauthausen and its satellite camps, with over 100,000 losing their lives. Since 1947, a memorial by the Republic of Austria has stood on the site of the former concentration camp.
- Durnstein - To lift spirits, the final stop is the charming medieval town of Dürnstein, situated in the most picturesque part of the Danube valley, the Wachau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Austria’s most renowned wine-growing region. Visitors enter the village through the city walls’ archway and have the opportunity to admire the historic buildings and shops, capture photos, and savor local specialties such as wines, liqueurs, and sweets. Notable photo opportunities include the old town hall, a popular wedding venue for couples from across Austria, the Dürnstein Abbey, with its history dating back to the consecration of Mary’s chapel in 1372, and the view from the fortress overlooking the city and the Danube River. Visitors can also hike the Lionheart Trail to the fortress ruins and learn about the history of England’s famous King Richard I, the Lionheart, who was held captive here on his return from the Crusades. The journey concludes with a return along the Danube to Vienna, at the desired endpoint.

Our first station, post an 80 km journey, is the Melk Abbey - the biggest baroque monastery in Austria and one of Europe’s largest. It is a Benedictine abbey and houses Austria’s eldest school, the Stiftsgymnasium. Subsequently, we proceed an hour further to Mauthausen concentration camp and traverse through the extensive facility including numerous barracks, defenses, and watchtowers. We also visit the on-site museum to get insights about the camp’s daily life.
Our return trip to Vienna is through the medieval town, Dürnstein, located in the most visually pleasing parameter of the Danube, and also declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Trapped here on his way back from the Crusades was King Richard 1st Lionheart. We emulate his journey on the Lionheart’s path.
