- Pearling Path - Dhow Building Yard: Situated next to Fishermen’s Port in Muharraq, this is the oldest and sole Dhow building yard in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The towering masts of the completed dhows greet visitors to the bustling yard, where scattered timbers and the soothing sea breeze narrate a unique story of a maritime nation. The primary use of dhows has always been pearling, but they are also utilized for fishing, passenger and cargo transport, and diving. Given Bahrain’s rich pearling traditions, it’s no surprise that the dhow industry is deeply intertwined with the Kingdom’s heritage.
Suq Al-Qaisariya (Al-Qaisariya Market): Part of the historic Muharraq Suq, dating back to the early 20th century. Research indicates that Suq Al-Qaisariya is nearly 100 years older, originating in the early 19th century and expanding over time to accommodate the growing economic needs of the local community, supported by the country’s stable economic, social, and cultural environment at the time. The suq is also a key component of the Pearling Trail, designated as a World Heritage Site in 2012.
Bin Matar House: Constructed on reclaimed land in 1905, the house was initially surrounded by the sea on three sides. Overseen by Bahraini master builder Mussa bin Hamad, the building was crafted in a traditional Bahraini style, using palm tree trunks, sea-stone, and gypsum. Originally, it served as the permanent majlis of Salman Hussein Bin Matar, one of Bahrain’s most distinguished pearling merchants. Salman bin Hussain bin Salman bin Matar was a man of exceptional skills and diverse interests. He joined his father’s pearl business and became one of the leading pearl merchants in the Gulf region during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Many foreigners, particularly French and Indian, depended on his expert guidance in pearl purchasing matters.
Bait Al Ghus (Diver’s House): The Al Ghous House is one of the 16 world heritage properties that comprise the Pearling, Testimony of an Island Economy UNESCO World Heritage site in Muharraq. The house offers a glimpse into the life of a diver, the first person to interact with the pearl, which fueled the expansive pearling economy.
