… After passing by Theresienwiese, the site of the world’s largest folk festival, Oktoberfest, the tour departs Munich and heads south on the highway…
- Prien am Chiemsee - Before exploring the largest, most opulent castle of Bavaria’s “fairytale king” Ludwig II, enjoy a 15-minute boat ride on Bavaria’s largest lake * Ferryboat round-trip prices (2023): Adults €10.00 / Children 6-15 years €5.00 * In Prien, a charming town of 10,000 on Lake Chiemsee’s western shore, you’ll find the lake’s largest harbor and the boat the king used to reach the island. During summer, the world’s oldest steam tram runs between the train station and the port!
- Schloss Herrenchiemsee - Herrenchiemsee Palace is nearly an exact replica of Versailles, the residence of French King Louis XIV, whom Ludwig greatly admired. During the 35-minute guided tour of the lavish interiors, it’s hard to imagine the king only stayed here for 10 days, and entirely alone! (2023 prices for Herrenchiemsee Palace: Adults €11.00 / Children under 18 free!) … It’s a 20-minute walk from the pier to the palace, or opt for a horse-drawn carriage ride. Your ticket also grants access to the fascinating Ludwig II Museum and the “Old Palace,” where you can admire the magnificent baroque rooms of the former monastery. Don’t miss the kitchen where meals were prepared for the king.
- Bad Toelz - After less than an hour’s drive, the tour arrives at the charming spa town of Bad Tölz, on the Isar River. Once a supplier of lumber and beer to Munich, continue the journey in a luxurious minivan through the stunning Bavarian Alpine foothills, reaching Hohenschwangau, the village of royal castles, after another 75-minute drive!
- Schloss Neuschwanstein - NEUSCHWANSTEIN Castle is a dream destination for countless travelers worldwide! No building in Germany is more visited than Ludwig’s most famous fairytale castle, construction of which began in 1869.
GUARANTEED SKIP-THE-LINE TICKETS ARE INCLUDED IN THE TOUR PRICE - EVEN AT SHORT NOTICE!
Neuschwanstein was dedicated to Ludwig’s favorite composer, Richard Wagner; the neo-Romanesque façade belies the king’s enthusiasm for building it as a high-tech castle.
During the 35-minute castle tour, all of the king’s completed living quarters will be shown. On the subsequent 15-minute walk to the exit, you’ll pass through an unfinished floor, then see the castle’s unusually modern kitchen and the planned bathroom.
- Marienbrücke - Queen Mary’s Bridge (“Marienbrücke”) - THE TOP VIEWPOINT - built in 1866 by King Ludwig II - is one of the world’s most famous! It can be reached by a shuttle bus (€4.00 p.p.) from the parking lot or via a pleasant 40-minute uphill hike. From the bridge, it’s a 20-minute downhill walk to the castle entrance, passing another magnificent viewpoint! PLEASE NOTE: Due to popularity, there may be waiting times for both the shuttle bus and bridge access! However, another spectacular viewpoint without waiting is nearby. In snow and ice, the bridge is inaccessible, and Neuschwanstein Castle can only be reached on foot or by horse-drawn hybrid carriage.
- Stiftkirche Rottenbuch - Another unforgettable stop is at one of the stunning baroque churches, such as Stiftkirche Rottenbuch, where the guide will share valuable insights about this masterpiece from the 11th and 18th centuries.
- Starnberger See - Later, the tour reaches the impressive Lake Starnberg, also known as the “Dukes Lake.” Magnificent villas line the lakeshore, including the summer residences of Sissi, the beautiful but ill-fated Empress of Austria. See the spot in the lake where King Ludwig II mysteriously died on June 13, 1886. Learn about the intriguing relationship between Ludwig and Sissi, and why he didn’t wish to marry Sissi’s younger sister. The lake’s only island (“Roseninsel”), also once royal property, was a frequent meeting place for Ludwig and Sissi…

- Are you able to walk slightly uphill from the car park to Neuschwanstein castle - approx. 1,5 km/1mile in an hour’s time? If not, we have to calculate additional (waiting-) time for the horse carriage or the Shuttle bus (not operating during snow and ice) – Anyway, an approx. 500 meters/0.3 miles uphill walk (up to 15 % slope) or an approx. 800 meters/0.5 miles downhill walk (up to 19 % gradient) from the respective terminal to the entrance of the castle have to be managed in any case! We can assist you to make sure that you don’t miss your tour.
- In Neuschwanstein castle there are 346 stairs alltogether (up and down) to be managed. If this is too much for you, and if you have an appropriate medical certificate of disability or restriction of mobility or similar (must be scanned and posted to us in advance), we can try to book an exclusive lift service only for you with a maximum of one companion, accompanied by a castle-staff. The elevator service is without additional costs, but (because of fire regulations) the number of tours with that service is very limited and must be reconfirmed by the castle authorities.
- The (flat) walk to HERRENCHIEMSEE PALACE from the pier is approx. 20 minutes. Or use a horse carriage (not in winter season): One-way fare per adult (2022): € 4.00 (children 5-14 years: € 2.00)
- Each castle can be reached also with strollers, but they are not allowed during the tour of the interiors.
