Legend has it that during the 1868 yellow fever epidemic, Rev. Thevis prayed to St. Roch, the Patron Saint of Good Health, promising to construct a chapel if his congregation was spared. Remarkably, no lives were lost, leading to the creation of both a shrine and a chapel.
St. Roch Cemetery stands out for its Stations of the Cross, which are represented by statues crafted in Italy by the workshop of renowned sculptor Enrico Arrighini. Every Good Friday, a procession of the 14 stations is held, continuing a cherished tradition.

St. Roch Cemetery, established in 1874, was founded by Rev. Peter Leonard Thevis. Legend has it that during the devastating yellow fever epidemic in 1868, Rev. Thevis prayed to St. Roch, the Patron Saint of Good Health, promising to construct a chapel in his honor if his congregation was spared. When no lives were lost, a shrine and chapel were erected. The community continued to honor St. Roch for blessings of health and healing. For many years, those who experienced health recoveries left behind their polio braces, glass eyes, dental plates, and other prosthetic items. These items are displayed in the chapel, which is open exclusively on the first Friday of each month from 11:00 am to noon during our tour.
