A Journey Through Time on the El Tren de Soller

Our day began with a sense of excitement as we were picked up from our hotel and whisked away to the harbor area in Palma. The anticipation was palpable as we boarded our respective coaches, ready for a day of exploration and adventure. Our first stop was the legendary El Tren de Soller, a charming old wooden electric train that promised a journey through the heart of Mallorca’s stunning landscapes.

The train station, nestled in a remote area with just a couple of huts offering refreshments and facilities, set the stage for our adventure. As the train departed promptly, we were treated to a scenic ride across the plains, gradually ascending into the majestic mountains. The highlight of this leg was undoubtedly the stop at a viewpoint, where we were greeted with breathtaking vistas that seemed to stretch on forever.

Arriving in Soller, we seamlessly transitioned to the tram, which was conveniently located right by the train station. The tram ride was a delightful experience, offering close-up views of charming shops and lush gardens. It was a unique opportunity to immerse ourselves in the local culture, albeit briefly, as we made our way to the picturesque Port de Soller.

Sailing to Sa Calobra: A Natural Wonder

The transition from tram to boat was smooth, and soon we found ourselves aboard a ferry bound for Sa Calobra. The boat ride was a highlight in itself, offering a 50-minute journey past dramatic mountains and cliffs that seemed to rise majestically from the sea. The sense of wonder and awe was shared by all the day-trippers aboard, as we marveled at the natural beauty surrounding us.

Upon arriving at Sa Calobra, we were given ample time to explore and enjoy the area. The promenade walk to the river estuary was a pleasant surprise, with the chance to spot some local wildlife, including goats. The journey through the two tunnels leading to the estuary was an adventure in itself, culminating in a breathtaking view that felt like stepping into a scene from a movie. The crystal-clear sea, framed by massive cliffs, was a sight to behold.

We took advantage of the self-service restaurants to grab a quick bite, opting for a baguette and pizza. In hindsight, a salad might have been a healthier choice, but the convenience of immediate service was appreciated. As we soaked in the beauty of the surroundings, we were reminded to keep our valuables secure, as a pickpocket incident served as a cautionary tale.

A Serene Stop at the Lluc Monastery

The final leg of our journey took us up and over the mountains on a winding road that tested the nerves of even the most seasoned travelers. The views were spectacular, but not for the faint-hearted. Our destination was the Lluc Monastery, a historical and spiritual site that offered a moment of tranquility amidst the day’s adventures.

While some may have viewed this stop as merely a chance to use the facilities, the monastery held its own charm. We took a moment to admire the Black Madonna and explore the serene surroundings. The gift shop offered refreshments at a more reasonable price than the bar, a practical tip for fellow travelers.

As we made our way back to the hotel, reflecting on the day’s experiences, it was clear that the Mallorca Highlights Tour had delivered a truly memorable adventure. While a bit more time in Soller or Port Soller would have been welcome, the day’s itinerary offered a rich tapestry of sights and experiences that left us with a deeper appreciation for the beauty and history of Mallorca.
