• Palmer - The group will gather at the Palmer Visitor Center to go over the day’s itinerary. From there, they will travel by vehicle to a glacial outwash plain to discuss the glaciers that shaped the Matanuska Valley.
• Bodenburg Butte - Next, the group will proceed to Bodenburg Butte, a well-known local landmark, and hike approximately 800 feet to the top. Along the way, there will be stops to talk about the local flora, fauna, and the boreal forest. At the summit, there will be an extended break to enjoy the views of the Knik Glacier and the surrounding mountain ranges, weather permitting.

The Butte is a popular choice for a moderate hike with stunning views. While visitors can choose to hike this landmark on their own, the local guides will provide valuable insights into the area’s history. From the geological changes to the diverse trees and flowers of the boreal forest, guests will be fully immersed in Palmer’s story.

At the summit, participants will identify evidence of past glacial activity and learn how the Butte stands out in an otherwise flat valley. On a clear day, the views will include the Knik Glacier, the Knik and Matanuska rivers, as well as the Chugach and Talkeetna mountains.

• Palmer - After the ascent of Bodenburg Butte, the group will descend the same trail back to the trailhead.

Upon returning to the Palmer Visitor Center, recommendations for other activities in the Palmer area will be provided.
