Surfing the Aromatic Waves of Coffee in Palmira
Trading the surfboard for a coffee bean, I ventured into the highlands of Palmira, Panama, for a hands-on coffee roasting experience. Join me as I explore the aromatic world of coffee at Finca Casanga, where passion and tradition blend seamlessly.
A Coffee Adventure in Palmira
As a seasoned traveler and surfer, I’ve always been drawn to the ocean’s rhythm, but this time, I found myself in the lush highlands of Palmira, Panama, ready to dive into a different kind of wave—the aromatic wave of coffee. My wife and I, along with a friend from Canada, decided to take a break from our usual surf spots and explore the world of coffee at Finca Casanga. The promise of a hands-on experience, from picking cherries to roasting our own beans, was too enticing to resist.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by Enrique, our guide for the day. His passion for coffee was infectious, and his knowledge of the farm and its practices was impressive. As we walked through the coffee trees, Enrique explained each step of the process, from tree to bag. We picked ripe cherries, washed and hulled them, and finally roasted our own batch. The experience was immersive, and Enrique’s enthusiasm made it all the more enjoyable.
The Art of Coffee Roasting
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the roasting process. Each of us had the chance to roast our own coffee, and the aroma that filled the air was intoxicating. Enrique guided us through the process, explaining the importance of temperature and timing. It was fascinating to see how the beans transformed, and the anticipation of tasting our own roasted coffee was palpable.
After the roasting, we gathered for a coffee tasting session. Enrique prepared coffee in three different ways, each with its own unique flavor profile. The Geisha coffee, in particular, was a revelation. Its delicate floral notes and smooth finish were unlike anything I’d tasted before. As we sipped our coffee, Enrique shared stories of his childhood, growing up surrounded by coffee trees, and his journey to becoming a coffee expert.
A Memorable Experience
Throughout the tour, Enrique’s attentiveness and care were evident. He frequently checked on my friend, who wasn’t feeling well, ensuring he was comfortable and had everything he needed. This level of hospitality made the experience even more memorable.
As we left Finca Casanga with our freshly roasted coffee in hand, I couldn’t help but reflect on the day’s adventure. It was a reminder that, much like surfing, the world of coffee is rich with stories, traditions, and a deep connection to nature. This experience was a perfect blend of learning, tasting, and enjoying the simple pleasures of life. If you ever find yourself in Palmira, I highly recommend diving into the Coffee Experience and discovering the magic of coffee for yourself.
