Surfing the Coffee Waves in Palmira, Panama
Trading the surfboard for a day, I ventured into the lush highlands of Palmira, Panama, to explore the world of coffee. The hands-on experience at Finca Casanga promised a unique journey from cherry to cup, and it did not disappoint.
A Journey into the Heart of Coffee
As a professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours chasing waves across Central America, but this time, I found myself drawn inland to the lush highlands of Palmira, Panama. The allure of the Coffee Experience was too tempting to resist. I was eager to trade my surfboard for a day and dive into the world of coffee, a staple that fuels many of my early morning surf sessions.
Upon arrival, I was greeted by the vibrant greenery of Finca Casanga, a boutique coffee farm nestled in the hills. The air was crisp, and the scent of coffee blossoms filled the atmosphere. Our guide, Melvin, welcomed us with a warm smile and an infectious enthusiasm for coffee. He introduced us to the different types of coffee trees, each with its own unique characteristics. I was immediately captivated by the hands-on nature of the tour, a refreshing change from the usual passive experiences.
Melvin led us through the process of picking coffee cherries, a task that required a surprising amount of skill and patience. As I plucked the ripe cherries from the branches, I couldn’t help but feel a connection to the land and the people who cultivate it. The experience was both humbling and exhilarating, a reminder of the intricate journey each coffee bean undertakes before reaching our cups.
From Cherry to Cup
The next step in our coffee adventure was processing the cherries. We learned how to separate the pulp from the beans, a process that revealed the hidden treasures within. Melvin introduced us to coffee tea, a delightful brew made from the cherry pulp. Its sweet, fruity notes were a revelation, a testament to the versatility of the coffee plant.
As we moved on to drying the beans, Melvin explained the various methods and their impact on flavor. It was fascinating to see how each step in the process could alter the final taste of the coffee. We spread the beans out to dry under the sun, a simple yet crucial step in developing their flavor profile.
Roasting was the highlight of the day. Each of us had the opportunity to roast our own batch of beans, adjusting the temperature and time to suit our preferences. The aroma of freshly roasted coffee filled the air, a sensory delight that heightened our anticipation. We bagged our creations, eager to share them with friends and family back home.
A Taste of Panama
The final leg of our journey was a coffee tasting session, where we brewed our beans using three different methods. It was a revelation to taste how each brewing technique brought out different flavors and nuances in the coffee. The Geisha coffee, a rare and prized variety, was a standout with its floral and fruity notes.
The owners, Andi and Rick, have curated a truly unique experience, blending education with hands-on participation. Their passion for coffee is evident in every aspect of the tour, from the informative sessions to the charming shop filled with coffee-related products. I couldn’t resist picking up a few items, including a travel mug that now accompanies me on my surf trips.
As I sipped my final cup of coffee, surrounded by the lush landscape and the friendly farm dogs, Karma and Dante, I felt a deep sense of gratitude. This experience was more than just a coffee tour; it was a journey into the heart of Panama, a reminder of the rich tapestry of cultures and traditions that make this region so special. Whether you’re a coffee aficionado or a curious traveler, the Coffee Experience is a must-visit destination that promises to leave a lasting impression.
