Exploring Panama City: A Surfer’s Cultural Adventure

As a professional surfer, I traded my board for walking shoes to explore Panama City’s cultural gems. Join me on a whirlwind journey through the city’s iconic sites, from the historic Casco Viejo to the awe-inspiring Panama Canal.

A Day in Panama: From Old Town to the Canal

As a professional surfer, I’ve spent countless days chasing waves along the sun-drenched coasts of Central America. But every now and then, I trade my surfboard for a pair of walking shoes to explore the cultural gems that these vibrant countries have to offer. My recent adventure took me to Panama City, where I embarked on the Panama Highlights Tour, a whirlwind journey through the city’s most iconic sites.

Casco Viejo: A Step Back in Time

Our day began in Casco Viejo, the historic heart of Panama City. As we wandered through its cobblestone streets, I couldn’t help but feel transported back in time. The colonial architecture, with its colorful facades and wrought-iron balconies, told stories of a bygone era. Our guide, Ivan, was a fountain of knowledge, sharing tales of pirates and conquistadors that once roamed these streets.

We paused at the Plaza de la Independencia, where the city’s history seemed to come alive. The heat was intense, but Ivan expertly alternated between indoor and outdoor sights, ensuring we stayed cool while soaking in the rich history. As someone who spends most of his time in the ocean, it was a refreshing change to dive into the cultural depths of this old town.

Amador Causeway and the Bridge of the Americas

Next, we made our way to the Amador Causeway, a scenic stretch that connects three islands and offers stunning views of the Panama City skyline. Here, we took a moment to appreciate the natural beauty of the area, spotting a few sloths lazily hanging from the trees. It was a reminder of the diverse wildlife that thrives in this tropical paradise.

The Bridge of the Americas was our next stop, a marvel of engineering that spans the Panama Canal. Although the Chinese viewpoint was closed, the sight of the bridge itself was awe-inspiring. Standing there, I couldn’t help but think of the countless ships that have passed beneath its arches, connecting the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

The Panama Canal: A Modern Wonder

Our final destination was the Panama Canal, a modern marvel that has fascinated travelers for over a century. Unfortunately, there were no ships passing through during our visit, but Ivan had a backup plan. He took us to a different lock, where we could watch the canal’s operations from a unique vantage point.

As we crossed the Centennial Bridge, we were lucky enough to spot a large vessel making its way down the canal. It was a sight to behold, a testament to human ingenuity and the power of global trade. The day ended back in Casco Viejo, where we strolled through the old town once more, savoring the last rays of the setting sun.

In the end, the Panama Highlights Tour was a perfect blend of history, culture, and breathtaking views. For anyone with limited time in Panama City, it’s an experience not to be missed. Just remember to book an early tour if you want to catch the boats in action at the canal!
