From Waves to Waterways: A Surfer’s Journey Through the Panama Canal

When the opportunity to explore the Panama Canal from the Pacific to the Atlantic presented itself, I couldn’t resist. As a surfer who’s spent years chasing waves across Central America, the chance to experience this iconic waterway was too good to pass up. Join me as I recount a day filled with history, wildlife, and breathtaking views.

Sunrise on the Canal

The alarm buzzed at an ungodly hour, but the promise of a day filled with adventure was enough to get me out of bed. As a professional surfer, I’m no stranger to early mornings, but this was different. Instead of chasing waves, I was about to embark on a journey through one of the world’s most iconic waterways—the Panama Canal. The air was crisp as I stepped out of my hotel in Panama City, and the city was just beginning to stir. Our guide, Daniel, greeted us with a warm smile and a promise of a day packed with sights and stories.

The boat ride along the canal was nothing short of magical. As we glided through the water, the early morning light danced on the surface, creating a shimmering path ahead. The canal was alive with activity, and we were lucky enough to see a variety of native birds and even a few playful monkeys swinging through the trees. Daniel’s knowledge of the local wildlife was impressive, and his enthusiasm was infectious. It was clear that he loved sharing this part of the world with visitors, and his passion added an extra layer of enjoyment to the experience.

A Journey Through History

Our next stop was the Agua Clara Locks, where we had the chance to witness the engineering marvel of the canal up close. Watching a massive ship navigate through the locks was a sight to behold, and Daniel’s detailed explanation of the process made it all the more fascinating. The visitor center offered a panoramic view of the canal, and a short video provided insight into its history and significance. As someone who spends most of his time in the ocean, it was intriguing to learn about the intricate systems that connect the world’s waters.

After the locks, we ventured into the jungle, where the lush greenery and vibrant flora and fauna were a feast for the senses. The rain had left the trails a bit muddy, but that only added to the adventure. We spotted more wildlife, including some “hairy scareys” as Daniel jokingly called them, and the experience was both exhilarating and humbling. The jungle felt alive, and being surrounded by such natural beauty was a reminder of why I love this nomadic lifestyle.

Fort San Lorenzo: A Glimpse into the Past

The final leg of our journey took us to Fort San Lorenzo, a historic fortress perched on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea. The fort’s weathered walls and strategic location told tales of pirates and privateers, and Daniel’s storytelling brought the history to life. Standing there, with the ocean stretching out before me, I couldn’t help but feel a connection to the past. It was a fitting end to a day that had been both educational and awe-inspiring.

As we made our way back to Panama City, I reflected on the day’s adventures. The Panama Canal Tour was more than just a sightseeing trip; it was a journey through time and nature, expertly guided by someone who truly loves what he does. For anyone looking to experience the heart of Panama, this tour is a must. And for a surfer like me, it was a reminder that sometimes the best adventures happen off the beaten path.
