Paro Taktsang - The Druk Air flight to Paro is renowned for being one of the most breathtaking mountain flights. Whether flying alongside the Himalayan range or over the foothills, each journey is a captivating experience, offering an exhilarating descent into the Kingdom.
Upon arrival at the airport, guests are warmly welcomed by our representative and then transferred to Thimphu, the modern capital city of Bhutan.
Full Day Sightseeing in Thimphu. (B/L/D)
Tashichho Dzong (Thimphu Dzong) - Explore Trashichhoedzong, the stunning medieval fortress/monastery that houses most of the Government’s offices and the King’s Throne room. It also serves as the summer residence of Je Khenpo, the Chief Abbot. Next, visit the National Library, which boasts a vast collection of ancient Buddhist texts and manuscripts. Following this, head to the Arts & Crafts School, renowned for traditional thangka paintings, where students can be seen creating intricate designs on cloth.
After lunch, visit the Handicrafts Emporium, which showcases a wide variety of beautifully hand-woven and crafted products. Then, proceed to the Memorial Chorten, a stupa built in memory of Bhutan’s Third King, who is fondly remembered as the Father of modern Bhutan. The paintings and statues inside this monument offer profound insights into Buddhist philosophy. Overnight stay at a hotel in Thimphu.
Drive from Thimphu to Punakha and Sightseeing. (B/L/D)
Punakha Dzong - After breakfast, drive to Punakha with a brief stop at Dochula Pass (3,080m) to enjoy the view and admire the Chorten, mani wall, and prayer flags that adorn the highest point on the road. If the skies are clear, the following peaks can be seen from this pass (left to right): Masagang (7158m), Tsendagang (6960m), Terigang (7060m), Jejegangphugang (7158 m), Kangphugang (7170m), Zongphugang (7060m), a table mountain that dominates the isolated region of Lunana, and finally Gangkar Plenum, the highest peak in Bhutan at (7497m).
Later, visit Punakha Dzong, strategically built at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers in 1637 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to serve as the religious and administrative center of the region. Punakha Dzong has played a significant role in Bhutan’s history. Despite being damaged by four catastrophic fires and an earthquake, the Dzong has been fully restored. Afterward, drive to Wangduephodrang to visit the Dzong and the local market.
Drive from Punakha to Paro. (B/L/D)
Paro Taktsang - After breakfast, drive to Paro, stopping en route to visit Simtokha Dzong, the oldest fortress in the Kingdom, built in 1627, which now houses the School for Religious Studies. In the afternoon, visit Ta Dzong, the National Museum of the Kingdom. Originally constructed as a Watch Tower, since 1967 it has served as the National Museum, housing a fascinating collection of art, artifacts, thangka paintings, and Bhutan’s exquisite postage stamps.
Afterward, walk down a hillside trail to visit Rinpung Dzong. Built in 1646 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the first spiritual and temporal ruler of Bhutan, the Dzong houses the monastic body of Paro, the office of the Dzongda (district administrative head), and the Thrimpon (judge) of Paro district. Overnight stay at a hotel in Paro.
Full Day Sightseeing in Paro. (B/L/D)
Paro Taktsang - After breakfast, drive north of Paro valley to the ruins of Drukgyel Dzong. From this fort, the Bhutanese repelled several invasions by Tibetan armies. Nearby, visit a traditional Bhutanese Farm House, which offers a good insight into the lifestyle of local people. Then, take an excursion to Taktsang Monastery, the most famous of Bhutanese monasteries.
Legend has it that Guru Rinpoche arrived here on the back of a tigress and meditated at this monastery, hence it is called “Tiger’s Nest.” The excursion to the monastery takes about 5 hours for a round trip. On the return to Paro town, visit Kyichu Lhakhang en route, one of the oldest and most sacred shrines of the Kingdom. Overnight stay at a hotel in Paro.
