- Óbidos - The medieval town of Óbidos is one of Portugal’s most charming and well-preserved locations.
Situated close to the capital and perched on elevated ground near the Atlantic coast, Óbidos has held strategic significance throughout history. It was inhabited even before the Romans arrived on the Iberian Peninsula, and the town flourished after being selected by the royal family. In the 13th century, King Dinis gifted it to his wife, Queen Isabel, and it became part of the Casa das Rainhas (Queens’ Estate), which was enhanced and enriched by various dynasties. This is a key reason for the high number of churches in this quaint area.
- Nazaré - Nazaré
A traditional fishing town, Nazaré has evolved into a bustling summer destination. The Sítio district, located at the town’s highest point and accessible by a funicular, offers the best views in the region. It is also linked to the devotion of Our Lady of Nazaré, who, according to a 12th-century legend, was called upon by the mayor, Dom Fuas Roupinho, as he was about to fall into an abyss while pursuing a deer. In gratitude for his salvation, Dom Fuas Roupinho commissioned the construction of a small chapel, the Ermida de Memória.
The people of Nazaré have a deep connection with the sea, which is evident in their local crafts, including nets, buoys, baskets, and traditional puppets dressed in the iconic seven skirts. This maritime influence is also reflected in the local cuisine, which features fish and seafood dishes such as caldeiradas (fish casseroles), soups, açorda (a bread, herb, and garlic purée), and dried horse mackerel.
