Puerto Maldonado – Amazon Lodge – Monkey Island – Night Activity

Monkey Island - Upon arrival at the airport, bus station, or hotel in Puerto Maldonado, guests will be transferred to our office, followed by a journey to the river port. From there, a boat ride along the Madre de Dios River will take approximately 40 minutes to reach our lodge. A warm welcome awaits with a refreshing local fruit juice, and guests will be introduced to the lodge’s amenities and facilities.

After lunch, a boat trip will be taken to visit Monkey Island. Guests will have the opportunity to explore the island, searching for monkey families by walking and calling them, possibly offering bananas or other fruits not native to the island.

Upon returning to the lodge, a nighttime caiman search in the river will be conducted, followed by dinner back at the lodge.

Sandoval Lake Full Day Exploring - Night Activity

Lago Sandoval - Following breakfast, guests will head to the Tambopata National Reserve for a 5 km walk through the lush tropical jungle to reach Sandoval Lake, one of the largest lakes in the Tambopata Reserve. The lake provides breathtaking views and is home to a variety of wildlife, making it a paradise for bird enthusiasts. Visitors often spot two or three monkey species along the trail. A typical regional lunch will be served, followed by a rowing boat ride to observe the diverse birdlife and monkey species, including the prehistoric shanshos, cormorants, jacanas, puma herons, howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, black capuchin monkeys, tamarin monkeys, and sloths. With some luck, a family of giant otters (nearly two meters long) and the largest recorded alligator, over 4 meters long, may be seen.

Guests will return to the lodge in the afternoon. After the day’s activities, they can relax and enjoy the lodge’s facilities or take a short walk. In the evening, a night walk will be offered.

Lago Sandoval - Lake Sandoval is renowned as the most beautiful lake in the Peruvian rainforest, covering an area of 3 km in length and 1 km in width, with depths ranging from half a meter to three meters. The lake is crescent-shaped, and its waters typically reach a temperature of 26°C.

Fauna. The lake serves as a wildlife sanctuary, home to giant otters or river wolves, black caimans, various species of macaws and parrots, kingfishers, turtles, monkeys, herons, and cranes, among other rainforest fauna. It is a biodiversity reserve with over 1,000 bird species.
