Wonderful Whaka trails and Māori village tour experience - This is well worth a visit. We were very fortunate to have Merri as our tour guide. Welcoming, informative and fun. Highly recommend and we’re thankful for TripAdviser.

Loved it - Really worthwhile day, we enjoyed learning, experiencing, tasting and smelling. We did the guided tour, cultural performance, hangi lunch and walked a bit around the self guided mud pool trails, though our young kids had tired legs by that point

Fantastic experience of Maori life. - A great tour from the local guide who lives in the Maori village and experiences everyday living in the village. From cooking meals over hot steam to washing in the hot outdoor thermal baths, we even got to eat a corn on the cob cooked in one of the hot pools. The tour was brilliant from start to finish and is well worth a visit.

Brilliant, fascinating , cultural tour. - This was a great tour with a local Maori guide who lived in the village all her life. The village is in a geothermal area and has lots of geezers large and small. The history of the Maori culture is fascinating and was brilliantly explained by our tour guide. A great tour and a must for any tourist in Rotorua.

Living Maori Village - We got the combo tour as we wanted to have a walk around the lakes. Guided tour with a knowledgeable local person who explained to us the insights of the village. You will taste some thermal boiled corn and a bonus free view of the geyser, which is not on the premises of the village, but you can get a free view. If you do the tour between 10 am and 1 pm, you can enjoy a free show including traditional maori dance and haka.

Insight into Māori culture - A fantastic insight into Māori culture and specifically into the lives of those living around the hot springs. I would really recommend the guided tour. It was well done with lots of information on the village’s past and present. Everyone was really friendly and welcoming. I especially loved the cultural performance. It was so well done with lots of information at the start on what you were going to see and the history of it all. Performers were fantastic with beautiful voices. Definitely a highlight of our NZ trip. A must for those wanting to learn more about the people and culture of the country

A great experience of a living village - We did the all day pass, so we had access to the guided village tour, the cultural performance and the self guided thermal trails. This was such an amazing experience. We kept waffling between the Whakarewarewa Living Māori Village and the Te Puia Cultural Center and ended up choosing Whakarewarewa and absolutely loved every minute. There is something about this being an active living area (around 20 families live here now) and have been guiding visitors for over 200 years through the area. Our tour guide is a descendant and was very informative of the area, the culture and the history. I encourage you to visit. I spent about 3 hours doing all three activities. The cultural performance is about 30 minutes and was fun to watch. The thermal trail was a great walk and glad I did it.

Maybe will come again - Been here a few times and usually things look different. Maybe because of a change of guide, usually all of whom we have found quite entertaining and informative. The concert performances have much improved over the years. Booking on-line is the simple way to pay and takes much less time for check in. Parking is easy. The various whanau craft shops are always interesting with locally made taonga. The trail walks are also interesting but I wish the many species of trees were labeled to inform us visitors. What we didn't like seeing was the many feral cats ducking in and out of the bushes. Is the Catholic Church been decommissioned as it does not look like a RC church? That is, lack of holy icons, etc. Going into the whare kai I could not find a coat or hat hook. I have to put my potae on the floor as I can't put it on a table or chair. Otherwise, we are happy to visit again sometime.
