Akagera National Park is a prominent tourist destination in Rwanda, renowned for its diverse primate population in the wild. Covering 1,200 km² in northeastern Rwanda, it shares a border with Tanzania. Established in 1934, the park aims to prevent poaching and hunting across three ecoregions: the swamp, the mountain, and the savannah. It is home to the “big five” safari animals: lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffaloes. Additionally, the park hosts other wildlife such as giraffes, 11 species of antelopes, hippos, and crocodiles. Visitors can also enjoy an exciting boat cruise on Lake Ihema, where they can observe schools of hippos, giant Nile crocodiles, buffaloes, and water birds.
