Phenomenal - There is just a lot of beautiful art there and laid out with lots of space. It’s free to local residence once a month but they didn’t ask me for ID. They had two paintings by El Greco who I love. I found the spot from the movie Vertigo which I really wanted to do. And all sorts of other works, delighted me, but the real highlight was the docent led tour which I believe happens every day.

Italian Paintings Worthy of Approbation At The Legion of Honor - The California Palace of the Legion of Honor is a fine art museum which features European Paintings and fine sculpture by Auguste Rodin. My review emphasizes its fine ,but not encyclopedic collection of Italian Paintings. From the Italian Medieval Period,14th Century,I appreciated fine paintings using tempera and gold leaf on wood panel by Luca di Tomme("Crucifixion",Sienese),Ugolino di Nerio("Saint Louis of Toulouse",Sienese),Bernardo Daddi("Crowned Martyred Saint,Florentine),Lorenzo di Niccolo("Saint Paul"),and Bicci Di Lorenzo("Saint Stephan and Saint Anthony"). From the Renaissance Period,I saw fine paintings worthy of approbation by Giovanni Dal Ponte,Bartolomeo Vivarini, and Fra Angelico. These painters produced their paintings in the Early Renaissance Period I also relished splendid later Italian Renaissance Period Paintings by Cesare Da Sesto,Rafaelino Del Garbo,Jacopo Dei Sellaio, and Giovanni da Cima Conegliano,All of these later Renaissance works had landscapes in the background The Legion of Honor has fine Baroque Period Italian Paintings which employed Tenebrism to perfection by Guercino("Samson and The Honeycomb"),Luca Giordano,Jiusseppe Ribera, and Massimo Stanzione. When you visit the Legion of Honor,I hope you enjoy their 14th,15th,16th,and 17th Century Italian Paintings as much as I did.The Legion of Honor has a marvelous collection of sculpture by Auguste Rodin, but that is a subject of a future review.

An absolutely beautiful museum, in a spectacular location! - We went on a Saturday afternoon. 4:00pm every Saturday they have a free Organ concert in the Museum. It is a beautiful museum, and the organ is spectacular. If you want a free activity on Saturday afternoon, and you like organ music, you will not be disappointed!

Wow! - An incredible experience, featuring paintings, ceramics, sculptures and more! It's amazing how close someone can enjoy the artwork. We also decided to enjoy the cafe, a must while visiting.

Best in San Francisco - I actually liked this museum much better than the DeYoung museum, but I prefer the detail of older pictures rather than contemporary pictures. Also there is so much more to see. And don't forget military discounts not only here but a lot of other places in San Francisco.

Worth a day's excursion! - Just about everything. Each piece is well described with appropriate history of the subject and artist. Impressive.

Wonderful place to visit - Wonderful place to visit with a wide range of art and exhibits particularly the Rodin collection. Plenty of parking and away from the bustle of the city which has lost it's appeal for me with the extortionate prices and drug addicts and drunks on the pavements near the seafront.

Nice experience - Interesting museum of the French Legion of Honour in San Francisco, created in memory of the end of World War I. Relevant works inside, with important pieces by Italian and French artists. Beautiful view outside on the Bay.

A woman's work is never done - I loved the Mary Cassatt exhibit, location, the art itself and the descriptions of Mary's life which gave me some insight into her struggles in the societal thinking of the time
